Mompreneurs: The New Woman that Wants it All

Mary Frederick
Mompreneur--ever hear the word? It's becoming quite the trend these days and with good reason. It seems that so more and more moms want to stay home with their kids, but can't afford to lose a second income altogether. The mompreneur is a mom who wants to be home with her kids, but also wants to stay marketable or sell a product or service to the masses to help with the financial burden. This latest trend amongst the mommy crowd is the latest demonstration that women want it all--and can have it!

I personally struggled with how I would be able to figure out a way to be home with my baby full time. I have plenty of friends who have their kids in daycare and they do very well, but for me personally I knew that I had to figure out a way to be home. I also knew that I was tired of traveling, of working hard for little or no appreciation, and for coming up with creative ideas and final products that were allowing others to climb the ladder. I was at a crossroads when I had my little girl and I knew that I needed to figure out a way to be home and work on my own terms. Thankfully I have a wonderfully supportive family, and a husband and mother who are of tremendous help--without them I'm not sure that I would be able to do it.

I focused on what I felt that I was good at--marketing and writing--and I thought hard about how I could use those skills to work for myself. Some of it was good luck, some was hard work, and some I swear was a blessing. I'm not a total success story yet, but I'm working on it. I along with many other moms out there have found what we feel that we're good at, what we feel we have talent within, and made a career out of it. There are a ton of scams out there targeted at the stay at home mom who so desperately wants to be with their kids but also feels compelled to supplement some of the lost income upon their quitting their full time job.

Mompreneurs are popping up everywhere and they are motivated, driven, and hard working--they want to do whatever it takes to stay home with their kids. I am so inspired to read the growing number of stories of moms who make it all work somehow. Moms who create products for their own kids and turn that into a business, moms who have started their own business based out of a need in the marketplace, or moms like me who offer services in areas such as writing that they know businesses have a need for. It won't work for everyone and it certainly has it's moments of mayhem, but in the end it is totally worth it.

I am amazed just in my own circle of friends how many talented women I see that have made a full time job out of stay at home mom and mompreneur--and they are doing fantastic! I have two friends who opened and are successfully running a children's store, another who is creating accessories for baby's room, another that is doing well in the home party business--it's incredible what a mom will do when it comes to her kids. There is no limit to the talent and ambition that comes out of a women when she is trying to figure out ways to make the best life for her family.

I have huge admiration for moms in all sorts of situations, but I am overwhelmed by how many successful mompreneurs are out there. I find it inspiring and hope to be one of the success stories one day, but for now I count my blessings every day that I am home with my little girl and making it work. I have a ways to go before I will ever sit back and relax, but for now I am finding my new role as full time mom and mompreneur to be the most fulfilling one I've ever had!
