Moms' Groups in the South Hills of Pittsburgh

Social Groups for Moms and Children in the South Hills Suburbs of Pittsburgh

Melissa Rachiele

Being a mom can be isolating. Stay at home moms often lack adult company because they are with only their kids all day, and moms who work outside the home often lack the cameraderie of other moms who are going through similar experiences. One way to deal with these issues of isolation is to join a mom's group.

The purpose of a mom's group is simple: to allow moms to have a social outlet, often while encouraging social interaction for their young children as well. Many of these organizations sponsor playgroups and meetups for kids, informational and organizational meetings for moms, and social "Mom's night out" events.

The South Hills area of Pittsburgh has several different moms' groups to choose from, depending on where you live and what your particular interests are.

MOMs Club

The MOM's Club is a mom's group designed particularly with the needs of stay at home moms of very young children in mind. The purpose of this mom's group is to provide a calendar of daily activities to help moms and kids stay busy. These activities include library and museum meetups, age based playgroups, and monthly parties. MOMs Club also hosts a monthly mom's night out, which can be a movie, dinner, or drinks at a local restaurant.

Depending on where you are in the South Hills, there are two different MOMs Club chapters to choose from. The Mt. Lebanon MOMs Club is open to only moms in the Mt. Lebanon area, while the South Hills MOMs Club covers Bethel Park, Brentwood, Baldwin, Jefferson Hills, and the surrounding areas.

MOPS

MOPS, or Moms of Preschoolers, is a mom's group dedicated to fellowship among moms. MOPS groups generally meet at local churches once a month. Meetings often include speakers, and many of them have childcare available so that moms can sit and talk and enjoy each other's company. It's purpose is to provide an outlet for moms of young children to sit and talk and get a break from the tedium of motherhood.

Local MOPS groups in the South Hills of Pittsburgh can be found at Pleasant Hills Presbyterian Church, the Peters Creek Baptist Church in South Park, and the South Hills Assembly of God in Bethel Park.

Mothers and More

Mothers and More is a social club for moms. Monthly meetings focus on a specific topic, with speakers from the local community, and also provide a good deal of social time for moms. The meetings are held in the evenings, making this a mom's group which is much more accessible to work outside the home moms than many of the others. Mothers and More also hosts playgroups and several Mom's Night Out Events throughout the month. Each chapter also has a service project.

The South Hills Mothers and More group meets on the first Monday of every month at the Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills in Mt Lebanon.

Burgh and Burb Moms
Burgh and Burb Moms is a local (not a nationally affiliated) mom's group in the Pittsburgh area. They are open to any mom in Pittsburgh or any of the surrounding areas, and they host meetups at local attractions as well as playgroups at private homes.
