Moms' Guide to Online Shopping

Tips for a Safe and Frugal Gift Giving Season

Nicole Feliciano
Savvy moms rely on the Internet to shop at convenient hours and compare prices. But even the most skilled bargain shopper can benefit from a few tricks this holiday season.

Be Money Wise

First, it is important to set a budget. Before you turn the computer on make a list of you gift-giving needs and allocate a set amount on each gift. Check off each gift as you go and keep a running tally of what you have spent.

Gather Information

These days private sale sites, like Totsy.com, Gilt.com and RueLaLa.com are the go-to resources for buying designer brands at steep discounts. These sites make agreements with brands (such as Ralph Lauren, Hape Toys, Marc Jacobs, etc.) to hold short-term sales at discount prices. It may take a few days or weeks to get your application approved-plan accordingly. For your favorite brands, it pays to follow them on Facebook and Twitter. The brands will often post special deals for their followers that won't even be displayed on the main website.

Be sure to sign up for the email list at the online stores you frequent. Give out your email when you shop and sign up for newsletters-but be smart about it. Use a designated shopping email and only check it when you are ready to shop. Momfinds.com is a subscriber newsletter that tells moms about special deals for parents.

Making the Purchase

Once you are ready to shop don't just type in your credit card number. There is still money to save. Before you click buy, check retailmenot.com and other websites that gather coupon code to see if there are any other discounts available. And last but not least look for free shipping. Freeshipping.org has a host of shipping codes for major brands.

Think you've got the best deal? If you are super-industrious you can call the customer service number (usually a toll-free number) and ask for an even better deal. (Note: the author tried this over the weekend and saved an extra $50 at Frontgate.com).

Protect Yourself

When it is time to pay, money-smart moms use the credit card that gives you the most cash back and the best return protection. Bank of America has a Power Rewards program that lets you earn points for travel or get cash back. And be sure to use a credit card-when you shop online you are protected by a federal law that covers you for purchases over $50. Microsoft's Tech Mama, Sarah Keeling, advises shoppers to look for websites that use encryption. There are three indicators to look for to confirm this: an "s" after http in the Web address (it should read https:) or has a small closed padlock icon in the address bar. Make sure you are clear on the return policy-especially with children's clothing as the sizing can vary greatly form brand to brand.

After your purchase has been made, start a folder in your email account to track shipping and purchases. Remember: Never reply to an email inquiry asking for your credit card. If something seems like a phishing scam DO NO REPLY. Call the company and ask for a service rep.

With these smart and frugal shopping tips you can save a bundle this holiday while giving the gifts your family will love.
