The Center for Brain Health at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, which conducted the study, reveals that children having Alzheimer's mother had a higher risk of Alzheimer's when they grow up. The study says that risk is four to ten folds than others. It has also shown that children who have Alzheimer's fathers are not liable to this disease.
The Center for Brain Health conducted the studies on 66 people-some with Alzheimer's history and others not. The conclusion was reached after conducting PET scans which analysed the glucose metabolism in the brains of these people.
People whose mother's had Alzheimer's had a faster reduction in glucose use in areas of the brain affected by the disease. The others who did not have Alzheimer's history showed only lesser reduction in glucose use. Even persons whose fathers had the disease showed a better result than the persons with Alzheimer's history. The research concludes that the genes inherited maternally are responsible for Alzheimer's, altering the brain metabolism; higher risk for children with mothers having Alzheimer's.
