Mona Lisa Painting Depicts More Mystery

Code Discovered in Eyes of Famous Painting

Speculation on the subject who sat for the painting "Mona Lisa" has never been cleared up. To add to the mystery, a code has been discovered in the eyes of the famous painting.

According to art historian Silvano Vinceti, "In the right eye appears to be the letters LV, which could well stand for his name (painter Leonardo Da Vinci). In the left eye, there are also symbols. It is difficult to make them out but they appear to be the letters C and E or B."

Most historians think that the model of Da Vinci's painting was the third wife of a wealthy silk merchant, Mona Lisa Gherardini. Other researchers think she may have been the widowed Duchess of Aragon, Isabella. Whoever the model was, Da Vinci thought she possessed enough interesting characteristics to work on his famous painting for approximately four years. The letters or symbols may aid historians in identifying the actual identity of the woman depicted as Mona Lisa.

This is not the only mystery connected with the 500 year old painting. On the reverse of the Renaissance painting are the numbers "149" with faint evidence of a fourth number removed. Some experts say this points to Da Vinci painting the portrait in Milan in the 1490's.

Mona Lisa has experienced a remarkable history over the centuries. She once graced the wall of Napoleon's bedroom. This location was only temporary, she was returned to her present home of the Louvre in Paris after Napoleon was banished from France.

The painting was also abducted by a thief hiding in a broom closet. It was an inside job and it did not resurface for two years. After it was offered to the Uffizi gallery for $100,000 US dollars it was returned to its permanent home at the Louvre in 1913.

Mona Lisa was scarred in 1956 when a disturbed person threw acid at her. The acid hit the lower half of the painting and it took a number of years to restore a small area in her elbow.

The newest mystery evolved from an antique book reference. The tiny letters can only be seen under a magnifying glass.

Historians are no doubt excited by the find in Mona Lisa's eyes. The painting will certainly provide years of discussions among researchers attempting to decipher this newest mystery.

Very, very interesting indeed. There's always someone out there, of course, who likes to destroy or defame what is appealing or good. Just the other day, I saw reference to someone disliking a Laurel & Hardy video on YouTube. Of course the person didn't dislike it. They were just trouble-making.

Hadn't heard any of this - thanks for the reporting.

I hadn't heard of this latest Mona Lisa controversy. I must say that I didn't notice anything unusual about the eyes of the painting when I saw it, but then again I did not spend a great deal of time looking at it. There were such large crowds gathered around to see the Mona Lisa that I didn't want to spend all my time on just one painting.

I'm surprised it's taken this long to find those letters. This is very interesting.
