Some monarchs rule
For more years than they
Have the fortitude or ability
To govern their people.
Some monarchs live briefly
But in superb magnificence
Which challenges the pinnacle
Of the highest
And most ornate
Church steeple.
Monarchs who share
Become participant
Oligarchs.
Monarchs which fly
Paint the air
With fleeting
Strokes of black-streaked
Bright orange.
To see one makes
The human heart sing
In perfect harmony
With the fluttering.
Short-lived but
Soulful
Flower with wings.
Beautifully benign
Monarchs.

Post a CommentLovely work, David. Thanks!
Very lovely, in my old house, every year my neighbors tree would be full of the beautiful butterflies, and one day during early fall- they would leave in mass... a great blanket of them in flight, an amazing thing to witness...
I love this poem, such strong imagery. Monarch butterflies have been my favorite species of butterfly since I was a boy. I've been one of the few in my life who could tell the difference between Monarchs and their mimic upstarts, Regent butterflies :)
