Money or Passion: The Major Career Dilemma

Jendayi
You are ready to enter college but are not sure of what you want to major in. Your parents are on one side telling you to choose a notable profession that will secure your financial future. You are on the other side of the fence dreaming up a career entirely different from their views. You are torn in between choosing the path of monetary wealth and the path of passion. This can be a very tough decision to make as you want to spend your life doing something you love but also do not want to pass up on the opportunity to generate a substantial income.

When trying to answer this question you have to look at the picture as a whole on a grander scale. Would you love waking up everyday dreading going to work but love spending a nice pay check or would you love waking up everyday ready to seize every day on a modest income? It all boils down to happiness and money. Money is not a substitute for happiness in fact; money can make you very depressed. You can have access to the finest clothing, foods, restaurants, cars, people, and homes and still feel as though something is missing in your life. This something that is missing would be passion. Passion although (for some) it may not generate you automatic wealth will guarantee you happiness. If you choose to spend your life doing what you love to do you will always anticipate every waking day despite the amount of money you bring home.

Wealth will come with passion because when you have passion you become prolific. You will have great work ethic which will catapult you to the top of your career. If you spend your life working in a career for the money and not because you genuinely love it, you may become inefficient in your work. You will lose interest and began to overlook major aspects on the job. This inefficiency will bring you much bigger problems in your profession.

You may have people (such as parents) telling you that you must earn a degree that will enable you to have a wealthy lifestyle, but when they tell you this ask yourself is this what you really want? Is that all that you want in life? Do you only want wealth? If the answer is no then you should go for the career that will be more fruitful (in mind and body) and fulfilling to you. If you want to be a missionary in Africa, or an editor for a magazine but your parents are telling you to become a doctor or engineer you should overlook their desires and listen to yours. You will be the one living the life that you choose not your parents or your friends and so it is important that you choose a life that will provide you with bliss.

Your parents may tell you that they will not fund your college education if you choose a career that they do not approve of. This can be heartbreaking to hear but if your passion is what you want to pursue then it will be up to you to fund your own education. You can do this by applying for financial aid, taking out loans, and working. It will be hard but your enthusiasm will be worth it because you will get to live your dreams and have a blissful life.

So when it comes down to choosing money over passion the answer is almost always passion. Follow your heart.

  • Money is no substitute for happiness
  • Wealth will come with passion
  • Large amounts of money can lead to depression
Some people fare well in careers that they have no interest in but their hearts ache and long for something more.
