Money Tips for Making it Through Expensive Ulcerative Colitis Treatment

Ulcerative colitis can have a negative effect on finances for a variety of reasons. In my case, I was unable to work for a while when we were trying to find a treatment plan that got my ulcerative colitis under control and into remission.

This was a very hard time for my husband and I. We went from having two full time incomes to having only one. Luckily, we had some savings to fall back on.

When I went to the doctor and found out that I may have ulcerative colitis many years ago, my husband and I decided that we needed to cut back on spending, minimize bills and save as much as possible. As it turns out, this was a very wise decision.

We had enough time from that visit until I had to leave my job to save a substantial amount of money while getting our bills down to the bare minimum. We paid off credit cards and our car. We got our monthly bills down to just the house payment, insurance and utility bills.

Things were tight financially from that day at the doctor's office until I went back to work a few years later. We made it out okay. I think we learned a valuable lesson during that time. We learned that money is just money. We had each other and we were still able to do some things that we enjoyed.

When you have a serious medical condition, such as ulcerative colitis, that requires you to take time off of work, you learn to make minor changes to help you through the rough times.

We made ends meet by buying no name brand items such as groceries. In most cases, these off brands or store brands cost much less than the name brands but, they taste just as good. We by the meat that is on sale at that time. Dollar stores are where I shop for most of my household goods such as cleaners and toilet tissue.

We learned that money does not have to come from a job outside of the home. My husband spent some money on a couple of dogs and we now have a home based business breeding dogs. I work from home as a web master and freelance writer.

Currently, my ulcerative colitis is still in remission. We have had two children and the lessons that we learned when we went through those tough financial years have helped us in our current situation. I am a stay at home mom. I do work from home as a freelance writer for a research company.
