Mongolian Death Worm Myth Turned Video Game?

Was it the Inspiration Behind "Tremors" Starring Kevin Bacon?

I kept seeing the search term "Death Worm" and "Mongolian Death Worm" in my popular search terms. Thinking it might be a new virus or something, I went to search out just what this death worm was all about and why were so many people searching on it?

The Legend of the Mongolian Death Worm

As I read about the Mongolian Death Worm, I remembered the movie, "Tremors" that starred Kevin Bacon, Reba McEntire, Fred Ward and Michael Gross. It was a comedy sci-fi, about chasing giant worm like creatures around the desert. I laughed all the way through it.

While the idea might have come from the Mongolian Death Worm myth, the legend and tales of the true Mongolian Death Worm sounds pretty scary. According to Virtue Science, this creature supposedly lives in the Southern Gobi desert of Mongolia.

According to legend, the 20 inch long, blood red worm shaped creature only comes out in June and July, the hottest months in the desert. It is said that the Death Worm can kill a human or animal from several feet away by spewing an acid based spit on them. If anyone gets close enough to touch it, the death worm will zap you with an electrical volt strong enough to kill.

According to Wikipedia, several Zoologists have led expeditions into the Gobi desert in search of the Death Worm. They didn't find any acid spewing, electric worms, so the legend or myth remains unconfirmed as being true, or just a tale. It has been suggested that the tale was started to keep people out of ancient parts of the desert.

Death Worm Video Games

Everyone loves a good myth or legend, especially when it can be turned into a video game. While searching for the term "Death Worm" I found several places that offered online games, downloads and apps that were all called "Death Worm."

Reading a bit about them, the worm in the game sounded suspiciously like our friend, the Mongolian Death Worm. Not only does it make a good legend or myth, it apparently makes a good idea for movies (think about Tremors) and it makes a good game.

I am not a gaming person, so I can't tell you if the game is any good or not. I am, however, one who is fascinated by myths and legends. I am also a Kevin Bacon fan and loved the movie, "Tremors." I thought the idea of such a creature living in the desert was ridiculous. I guess I was wrong.
