Monster Hunter Tri for Wii Video Game Review

You Just Haven't Hunted Until You've Monster Hunted..

The Monster Hunter series originally aired on the Playstation 2 in 2004. Since then, the game has had moderate success with its strategy of having players destroy monsters, use the supplies from the monsters' bodies to get better equipment, and get out there to kill some more. Now, however, the series comes to the Wii because developers Capcom were unwilling to pay the high production prices to make the game on the PS3. As a result, the Wii has its first serious RPG and fans are happy with what they see.

Plot

The plot in Monster Hunter Tri remains the same as it has always been; why mess with a proven formula? Players are sent around the world by The Guild with a very specific mission: to hunt certain monsters that they have been commissioned to take down. Once you kill your smaller monsters, you strip their dead bodies of anything useful. These new items you receive will be helpful in making new armor and weapons for you as well as feeding you. After you've repeated this method over and over, you'll find yourself facing huge monstrosities that are a real treat to annihilate. These creatures make one think of the monsters from God of War III; they are huge and it up to you to do what you do best. The game has no real plot, exactly, and was modeled after MMORPGs.

Gameplay

What makes this series work is the way people just love to work their way up through the ranks. The repetitive killing of the game won't feel repetitive at all when you've finally worked up to killing a huge creature. Still, this is the sort of game that hardcore RPGers will find the most fun. The battle system of this game is a lot like Final Fantasy XII. You'll run through areas, killing monsters in action RPG style before heading back to your own home that you can decorate. This game has a lot of small things that can entertain you if you get tired of the ceaseless slaughtering, though you probably won't. You can fish, catch bugs, pick plants, and more. The thing about this game is the graphics are impressive enough to really make you feel in the moment. On top of that, the game features online play which can really enhance the experience. One of the main new features of the game is the new underwater play. Now, you can dive deep into the depths of the sea and hunt sea creatures. The only thing is you have to keep a close eye on your oxygen bar. When you choose your character at the beginning of the game, you can choose from seven different weapon types that all feel very different. The Wii remotes make controlling your character and attacking a bit frustrating, so using the classic controllers is a good idea.

Fans of the series and reviewers both agree that this is the best Monster Hunter game yet. Fans give it close to a perfect score, while reviewers give it an 8 to 9/10.
