Mont St-Michel

Sacred Location, Unique Destination

If you find yourself blessed with the opportunity to travel in France, Mont St-Michel should be at the top of your must visit list. Situated on a tidal island off the northern coast of France, Mont St-Michel rises from the sands beckoning visitors to visit its mysterious and majestic walls. What the abbey doesn't whisper is the 900 or so steps you will have to climb, but it is oh so worth it.

According to Rick Steves, Le Mont is among the top four Christian pilgrimage sites with over 3 million visitors yearly. As noted by Sacred Destinations, Le Mont was originally used as a stronghold in the 6th century, and a monastic establishment (Mont Tombe) was erected in the 8th century. Through many years (and wars), many structures including a gothic refectory and cloister were added to the abbey and was even used as a prison (housing Victor Hugo at one point!) during the Revolution. A portion of the gothic architecture is known as Le Mervielle, and a running commentary is it is a "marvel" that it is still standing! However, don't fear, it is one of the most stunning views from Le Mont. If you are able to draw your gaze for a few seconds, take a glance at the stones you are walking on as they still have the individual mason marks still visible.

Positioned on a tidal island, Le Mont is only accessible by vehicle during low tide, and keep in mind the tide changes quickly! While walking across the sands to Mont St-Michel is technically possible, it is highly recommended not to do so without a guide unless you wouldn't mind finding yourself suddenly a permanent fixture in the quicksand. For those wishing to have a complete experience, there are several hotel options on Le Mont, as well as restaurants and shops. Of course, one must grab a chocolate hazelnut crepe at any available opportunity, and plenty are to be found on Le Mont.
