Allen Bell
In the 1880's, a pioneer named Gustav Rittel built a cabin 60 miles north of Helena, Montana. Unknown to old Gustav this was the beginnings of Blacktail Guest Ranch. Since then, many guests have made the ranch their annual vacation site.

The Blacktail Ranch is a great place for many other things besides vacationing. Many workshops, retreats, and weddings are held here also. The qualified and experienced staff can help you arrange no matter on your need. The atmosphere makes for a great place for outdoor activities or just relaxing.

The original six cabins are still part of the guest cabins although the have all been modernized for the comfort of guests. The main lodge has seven dormitory style bedrooms that sleep two to four people. There is a large private bathroom on the upper floor and separate men and women's bathrooms on the main level. If you seek more private, accommodations there are four one-bedroom cabins. Most of them have a Jacuzzi tub. The larger two bedroom cabins have a sleeping loft. All the cabins have full baths and private decks.

If you enjoy camping, there are three teepees that have beds, carpeted floors, and reading lamps. The large meadow up the river makes a perfect place to pitch your tent or one of the tents the ranch provides. The main lodge is still only a five-minute walk from the camping area. The main lodge has a huge hot tub, sauna, and an indoor lounge with fireplace and satellite television.

Meals at Blacktail Ranch are served family style at the main lodge. The kitchen staff can accommodate any dietary preference. There are fresh baked goods daily, organically grown vegetables, fresh eggs and locally grown beef.

The ranch takes pride in being a great place for retreats or meetings. The octagonal Hogan, which is built in southwestern style, is comfortable and spacious. It is located on a hillside above other buildings, which allows for great views of the mountains.

There are riding lessons upon request. If you are looking for a riding adventure there is the three-day "Divide Ride" which starts at the ranch and goes to the top of the Continental Divide.

You can also fish a mountain stream or through a line in the South fork of the Dearborn River. The Black Forest River the famous "River Runs Through It" river and the Missouri River are just minutes away. The ranch also offers both day and overnight rafting adventures.
