Monterey Grill in Port Orange, Florida Restaurant Review

Bringing West Coast Cuisine to East Coast Residents

Kathy Browning
Monterey Grill offers California-inspired cuisine to residents and tourists of Port Orange, Florida. Located at 1665 Dunlawton Avenue, Monterey Grill is tucked away in the Shoppes of Yorktowne retail strip mall near I-95, making for easy access to this unique and delightful restaurant.

Monterey Grill opened for business in Port Orange, Florida in mid-2008 and quickly received twelve prestigious awards presented by Daytona Beach News Journal. In addition to being voted "Best All Around Restaurant", Monterey Grill was recognized for: Best Creative Chef, Best Menu Selection, Best Restaurant Service, Best Burger, Best Lunch Specials and Best Specialty Salads.

Monterey Grill is one of the few restaurants in the Port Orange, Daytona Beach, Ponce Inlet area to offer a brunch menu. Brunch is served daily until 2:30pm and offers an array of eggs, omelets, waffles and French toast.

My personal favorite brunch option is the Big Sur Combo which includes two eggs cooked to order, choice of bacon, sausage or breakfast ham, and cinnamon French toast. I have also indulged in the Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Waffle slathered in real whipped cream and the Pecan Waffle with fresh whipped butter and hot maple syrup. Although deemed as brunch items, the waffles are so decadent they should fall into the "Desserts" category.

Monterey Grill's lunch menu offers something for everyone and all items are available for carry-out. Indulge in fresh salads topped with homemade dressings; made-from-scratch soups; and unique sandwiches and wraps.

The Chicken Walnut and Fruit Salad is a refreshing choice for hot summer days. This homemade chicken walnut salad includes seasonal fruits and melons over a bed of fresh greens with choice of homemade dressings including Parmesan Ranch, Maple Honey Mustard, Bleu Cheese or Citrus Vinaigrette.

Sandwiches and wraps are served with choice of French fries, Sweet Potato fries, Farmers Market vegetables, or fresh fruit salad. My personal favorite is the Monterey Club Sandwich which offers an exquisite flavor combination of mesquite turkey, brie cheese, apple slices, baby greens and honey mustard dressing on whole wheat bread. The Sweet Potato fries pair well with this sandwich and will leave you satisfied well beyond dinnertime.

Monterey Grill offers an extensive dinner menu which includes appetizers, pasta dishes, entrées, and trios. In my opinion, Trios offer the best value. Diners can select from Grilled Salmon, Fire-Grilled Chicken, Crab Cake, Coconut Fried Shrimp or Sirloin Steak paired with Farmers Market vegetables and parmesan mashed potatoes. Prices range from $7.99 to $10.99 for Trio combinations.

Pasta selections include Chicken Marsala, Chicken Parmesan, Tomato Basil Shrimp, or Black and White Pasta; a combination of blackened chicken and blackened Tiger shrimp. Monterey Grill offers the option of ordering either the lunch or dinner portion.

Unless you are extremely hungry or want to take home leftovers, I recommend ordering the lunch size portion. Pasta lunch portions range in price from $6.99 to $8.99, while dinner portions start at $12.99.

Monterey Grill's entrée selections include your choice of French fries, Sweet Potato fries, Farmers Market vegetables, Parmesan Mashed or Baked Potatoes. Selections range from Fried Shrimp to Filet Mignon and Prime Rib to Chicken Fingers. Entrée prices range from $8.99 to $19.99.

My personal favorite dinner entrée is the Monterey Chicken which includes a fire-grilled chicken breast, sautéed spinach and artichoke hearts with Monterey Jack and lemon butter sauce. The Coconut Fried Shrimp comes in as a close second and includes ten enormous Tiger shrimp served with a delicate orange marmalade sauce.

If you have room for dessert, Monterey Grill won't disappoint. Selections include Mocha Mud Pie, Carrot Cake, Strawberry Croissant Shortcake and Ghirardelli Brownie Sundae. Desserts are available in half or regular portions.

Half portions are more than sufficient, but the regular portions are perfect for sharing. Better yet, half size portions are only $2.99 and regular size desserts are $4.99; eliminating a little bit of the guilt for these indulgent pleasures.

The atmosphere of Monterey Grill in Port Orange, Florida is laid-back, yet sophisticated. Attire ranges from board shorts and T-shirts to casual dressy. The front of the restaurant offers intimate seating and easy access to the bar, while larger groups are accompanied at the back.

Monterey Grill is open seven days a week. Weekday hours are 11am to 9pm, Saturday hours are 9am to 9pm and Sunday hours are 8am to 9pm. Catering, delivery services, and gift cards are also available.

If you want mediocre food, horrible service & a complacent manager, then this place should be at the top of your list! Dined there recently on two separate occasions, same outcome both times, TERRIBLE.
Tried to give 'em the benefit of a second chance. but both times were very disappointing. Ugh...

Dirty, filthy lettuce, undercooked fish, stems served for vegetables, food served late (only 3 other tables occupied) a wait staff that acts like they're doing you a favor coming to the table & a manager that just doesn't get customer service. There are too many good restaurants in Port Orange to choose from with good service that makes you want to come back again.

Will NEVER spend my dining $$ here again

Very nice review and couldn't agree with you more. We were there just there recently and again enjoyed another fine meal.

Wow, the Monterey Grill sounds as amazing as Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse that you reviewed before, just on a different level. That Monterey Club Sandwich sounds absolutely delicious.
