Montgomery Gentry debuted in 1999. In 2000, they were awarded American Music Award for Favorite Artist, the Academy of Country Music Award for Top New Vocal Duo or Group. In 2005, they were CMT's Most Played Duo.
The concert was presented by radio stations KSSN 96 FM and 106.7 The Wolf. About 9:30 p.m. they started playing on the Budweiser stage, which was right next to the Arkansas River. The concert was held outdoors so it was basically standing room only. The only people I remember sitting were way in the back sitting on blankets on the ground. Because it was held at Riverfest, which is an annual festival held on Memorial Day weekend every year, the beer was flowing freely. Well, at $5 a pop I guess it wasn't free. Anyway, it seemed like all the really drunk people were up towards the front trying to edge their way closer to the stage which happened to be right where I was standing.
Because it was opening night of the festival, there was a laser light show right before the concert that appeared over the river. As for the concert itself, the props, lighting and effects were awesome. There were lots and lots of neon lights and smoke. When the curtains came down, the crowd went wild. Their music has a country base with a little southern rock thrown into the mix. The song Clouds is one of the few songs that stuck out in my head because he sang it for his late father and son. It was very emotional and moving. There were a couple of songs he sang that were very patriotic, My Town and Something To Be Proud Of, that really got the crowd cheering. I really liked Montgomery Gentry, and if they come back to town I would like to see them again, but not at an outdoor concert. Although, if it would have been held indoors, I probably wouldn't have been able to get close enough to the stage to snap some of the really good pictures I have. I haven't been to any other concerts this year, but compared to the last concert I went to, which happens to be another outdoor concert, this one was definitely better. It was storming and lightning at that one. The weather was perfect for this one. It was a beautiful night.
