Jason Davids is an infamous freshmen at Montgomery Lake High, fervently chasing after the false promises of the world. He is traveling hastily down the road to destruction with a pride-dominated lifestyle of drug and alcohol abuse. Jason's childhood best friend Chris Dunkin has turned from darkness to light, leaving Jason perplexed, bitter, and resentful.

When disaster suddenly strikes Montgomery, a near death experience lands one of Jason's acquaintances in a coma. Jason feels responsible, believing he could have prevented the tragedy if he had been sober. Broken, guilty, and helpless, he attends a prayer service with Chris. As Jason's eyes graze the face of the girl singing on the altar, he becomes captivated. A light is shinning from the girl that Jason cannot comprehend, yet cannot deny. He stares at her, realizing for the first time that he is completely dead inside.
