Montgomery's Dream

James R. Ford
Montgomery waits for the sun. At ten after six, he peers through the living room window, and looks to the east. Below, on the street, cars assemble at the intersection light and move quickly when the light turns green. Five minutes later he looks again while sipping on instant coffee sweetened with just enough sugar.

The darkness is fading to light, but the sun is not yet visible on the horizon. It's Tuesday, and an ambulance shrieks by with incredibly loud sirens. There is comfort in knowing that not many, if any, will be able to appreciate the awesome power of a morning's beginning. Montgomery pauses, then settles in his favorite comfortable chair, and closes his eyes.

What was that dream he had this night. With boats on the water, and much laughing. He had awoke, remembering someone talking about hot dogs and the fair that was not coming to town. This bothered him, for the annual fair seemed important. Now with a few minutes to reflect on a previous dream, he had fallen asleep again.

The sun was rising sharp over the trees, and Montgomery had fallen asleep again. Missing another awesome sunrise, he'd be pissed that he let himself miss another one. It was going to be that kind of day.
