The gorgeous city of Montreal, Quebec is home to the 10-day Montreal World Film Festival, which, according to its Web site, attempts to "encourage cultural diversity and understanding among nations" through its choice of cinema from around the globe.

The Montreal World Film Festival is comprised of the following:

World competition. This includes world and international premieres. The international official jury for the Montreal World Film Festival awards prizes such as the Grand Prix of the Americas, Special Grand Prix of the Jury, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Artistic Contribution and the Innovation Award, as well as two prizes for short films.

First films world competition. This section of the Montreal World Film Festival recognizes directors of selected first feature films. A separate jury awards the Golden Zenith, Silver Zenith and Bronze Zenith to the winners of this section.

Hors concours. World Greats, out of competition category.

Focus on world cinema (Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania). Celebrates the "world" part of the "World Film Festival."

Documentaries of the world. Includes nonfiction films reflecting the subjects and concerns of filmmakers from countries around the globe.

Tributes. Celebrates the best in cinematic creators.

Every year, films from 70 countries are selected, from newbie filmmakers to the pros, and everyone in between. Montreal is able to boast that some great films of our time have been discovered there.

Be sure to add this phenomenal film festival to your list of places to see fantastic cinema. The food, the nightlife and the French-Canadian culture, mixed in with some of the best up-and-coming films out there, make for a winning combination.
