MoonChyld's Entertainement - Once Upon a Time

T. S. Jones

The series premiere of ABC's Once Upon A Time brings a twist to the stories we've grown to love as children. It begins with the wedding of Snow White and Prince Charming after he kisses her back to life. The seven dwarfs are of course in attendance as all of the lovely people who enjoy the world where there is a happy ending. Everyone except the Evil Queen of course. She makes an unexpected appearance at the wedding telling them that she has other plans for their perfect lives. While carrying their child, Snow White seeks information from the one we know as Rumpelstiltskin who can foresee their fate and tells them the one who can save them is their unborn child.

Emma, the daughter of White & Charming, is reunited unexpectedly with her 10 year old son Henry after finishing a bail bondsman job - or in her words bail bondsperson - on her birthday. He tells her that she must take him to a town called Storybrooke in Maine. The objective is to save the fabled characters from a curse where they are trapped in our world without knowledge of who they really are. The thing that Emma doesn't know about herself is that she is the offspring of the enchanted couple. Once in Storybrooke Henry introduces his therapist - unbeknownst to him as Jiminy Cricket his biological mom and makes it known that he's an adopted son of a prominent resident there.

The beginning of how things came to be starts in a series of flashbacks in where the main characters of our childhood stories are in a meeting where they receive confirmation of Rumpelstiltskin's prophecy of the Queen's curse where only one can be protected from it - Snow White & Prince Charming agree it should be their daughter Emma. What they didn't expect was her early arrival into the world; be it ours or that of where fairytales are born. Knowing that the Queen is in hot pursuit of their child Snow White tells the Prince to put her in the wardrobe closet as to be hidden from the Queen. Just when things couldn't get any worse Snow White finds her husband injured and unresponsive after having fought off the Queen's men. The Queen's pleasure in seeing her stepdaughter's pain quickly turns into anger after seeing that Emma is gone, thus being saved by the closet and transported into the real world not knowing her true origin. It's at that moment the Queen decides to invoke her curse on those she feels don't deserve a happy ending and make it so that the only person that knows the truth is her.

At this point the Evil Queen is the Mayor of Storybrooke who adopted Henry as a baby ; Snow White is a teacher at Henry's school named Sister Mary Margaret who gives him a book of fairytale stories that holds the truth of the residents there. After much suspension due to Henry being adamant about Emma staying in town and the Mayor coldly admitting that she loves her adoptive son, she checks into the town's inn ran by Granny and her rebellious granddaughter one would believe to be Little Red Riding Hood; Rumpelstiltskin is now known as Mr. Gold - the owner of Storybrooke. As far as Prince Charming - he is a patient named John Doe who is in a coma.

And remember ladies and gentlemen…this is just the beginning.

Once Upon A Time is a series that is sure to please the inner child that grew up reading the fairytale stories that now have an extra dimension. With stars like Jennifer Morrison (House), Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love, Walk the Line), Lana Parrilla (Swingtown) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Rabbit Hole) this will certainly be a hit for the fall season.

Once Upon A Time can be seen every Sunday at 8pm on ABC.

I've been writing about the entertainment world for some time now. I enjoy the aspects of it, the ins and outs, and some of the drama is like a great reality show. My wish is to write for a few magazines and...  View profile
