MoonChyld's Entertainment News: The City - Whitney Starts Fresh in the Big Apple

T. S. Jones
This season of The City has a now single Whitney settling into her new apartment in the West Village and her job at People's Revolution with Kelly Cutrone - she worked for Kelly in L.A. when she was on The Hills. The added plus is that she is no longer working with the credit stealing Olivia anymore. While Whitney's working with Kelly she's gonna work on her fashion line in her off hours; Kelly also offers to help Whitney along the way. A friend of hers from L.A., Roxy, secures a job at People's Revolution with Whitney and is bunking on her sofa until she finds a place of her own. They agree to have some friends over for a small party but Whitney lets her know they are not to have loud music after 11pm (Whitney was notified by the landlord) and not a lot of people. Roxy lets that go in one ear and out the other and Whitney sees it for herself when she gets home from work to not only find 20 or more people in the apartment but loud music playing. This causes one of the neighbors to call the police and the party is stopped.

Olivia accepts the position of Accessories Editor at ELLE Magazine based on the Jessica Alba cover she claimed to have put together (it was Whitney's idea) and whatever else she did as the US liaison for DVF London. She's introduced to the head of the publicity department, Erin, who doesn't seem to be vibing with the socialite. Feeling the tension in the room, Olivia decides to leave after meeting Erin; someone she'll be working closely with. Her credibility is put to the test when she's assigned to put together outfits for a segment on the Today show; the topic is on budget-minded office and beach looks. Although the task seemed simple enough it's Olivia and she thinks she has the right idea on the outfitsd she's picked. Erin takes a look at the pieces and gives constructive criticism that Olivia finds offensive and tellsErin that if she doesn't like the pieces then she should do the job herself. They go back and forth and Olivia says she has a job to do and Erin has a job to do. Erin's taken aback saying she's never been spoken to in that manner; Olivia storms out with Erin following her; they continue to argue.

The Today Show segment does go well but after it was over Erin and Anne Slowey, ELLE's fashion news director, talk about the pieces Olivia picked and agreed that she needs to think about the targeted consumer and not what she would wear. Having this be a hard pill to swallow, Olivia says her goodbyes and leaves the Today set. She has the attitude that she's above everything and she may have met her match in Erin who feels she's not ready to take on the responsibilities that come with her new position. Olivia may just be intimidated by Erin. She knows what she's doing and is good at her job; that's why she's the head of the publicity department.

In the world of Cutrone, Roxy and Whitney work on a photo shoot with Kelly for a new jean line and Roxy has a suggestion to make the shoot better. Whitney tells her to run it by Kelly first before going to the designer which is only fair; she is after all the boss. Roxy thinks about it fro a minute and decides to go over to the designer and gives her suggestion which he loves and Kelly notices the move Roxy made and lets her know that even though the idea was a good one, she should have went to her first with it; the same thing Whitney just said. Nice way to start on your first day there Roxy.

Back at the office she and Whitney talk about the shoot and thinks it went well. Kelly enters in and tells them that they did a great job and that Roxy's idea was a good one and it did bring more attention to the jean although the model wasn't all that great. She then stresses that she is the boss, it's her company and while Kelly been in this business for 20 years; Roxy's been at it for 2 days. Roxy took it in but it seems all she heard was that Kelly liked the idea and the shoot went well. She doesn't take what Whitney is tells her seriously. As ambitious as she is, Roxy has to learn her place and not step on the toes of her superiors.

Olivia on the other hand is going to have to check her ego at the door while working at ELLE because being a socialite won't carry her there. She thinks she has her finger on the pulse of the industry but cutting corners and half assing it will not help her move forward in the company. That is if she last the whole season.

The City follows The Hills on MTV Tuesdays at 10:30.
