Moonfruit Tops Twitter Trends with MacBook Give-away

What is Moonfruit and Why is it Giving Away MacBook Pros?

LONDON, England, July 2, 2009-- It's an exciting time for technological celebrations. Who knew that not only is it the 25th anniversary of the Sony Walkman but also the 10th birthday for do-it-yourself web site builder Moonfruit?

The answer is enough Twitter users to make Moonfruit the top trending topic this morning thanks to the Moonfruit giveaway promotion. With increasing success Twitter plugs people into what's happening in the world from personal news to product awareness and right now that awareness is about Moonfruit which is a web site building software.

The Moonfruit promotion urges "Win a MacBook Pro by using Twitter" and it really is that simple. They promise to give away 10 new 13" MacBook Pros in 10 days with a premium Moonfruit Sitemaker Pro account as a bonus prize for each winner. Send out a tweet that includes "Moonfruit" in any context and you are entered for the random algorithm selected drawing.

The give away, run by Sitemaker Software Limited in London, England, began Tuesday, June 30th, at 3pm BST, and concludes on Friday, July 10th, at 3 pm BST. It is open to anyone in the world 16 or older with a Twitter account. Participants get one entry for each tweet containing the keyword but are prohibited from using automated procedures to manufacture tweets. Winners will be announced daily.

It is very likely that this marketing tactic of tweets will continue since the tactic seems to be working. The Twitter campaign by Moonfruit is at least partially in response to a similar campaign last month by another web-ware developer SquareSpace. SquareSpace offered Twitter users the chance to win one of 30 iPhones given out over 30 days and successfully topped the Twitter trends on several occasions.

Looking at the "Win a MacBook Pro using Twitter" promotional materials some people will notice that there are no Mac trademark icons and that the "M" centered on the computer in the logo is not a Mac symbol but the Moonfruit trademark M. That is because this is not a Mac promotion but rather a promotion banking on the popular cultural success of Mac branding.

Marketplace dominance is key to technological success and both Moonfruit and SquareSpace are trying to achieve theirs by dovetailing onto the Mac popularity. Give away promotions are only successful if they have a prize that people want. In this case those prizes are iPhones for SquareSpace and MacBooks for Moonfruit.

If these Twitter campaigns are successful for the companies, which are both competing for dominance in web building software arena, the giveaways will translate into more customers and lift their own name brand status to the level of being the give-away product rather than offering another companies prize to attract customers.
