Moonlight Over Amsterdam

Melissa R. Mendelson
Imagine living forever. See a world born century after century. Know every soul that passes by you. Taste life but never savor death. Watch countless sunsets on days that will never end and a rising moon on nights reaching into eternity. Would you walk this world forever if you could, or would you give up your immortality to have the one that you will forever love?

In the midst of a chaotic TV season, where new shows shined for few to see and many were swept away undiscovered, two men stood out, catching our attention. Their deep eyes drew us in, revealing the conflict kept within. Scars lingering across their skin told us of moments, where they could have died. Their actions portrayed bravery and courage, and their heart was what captured us. And these men knew the world more than we ever would, and these men would remain when we are long gone.

Mick St. John portrayed through Alex O'Loughlin in the TV show, Moonlight was a vampire thirsting to become mortal. Hired as a private eye, he took on the hard cases, searching for the truth and crossing paths with Beth Turner portrayed by Sophia Myles. Torn between his love for Turner and knowing that if he turned her, she would die, Mick struggled to keep his feelings in check, but with his wife returning from the dead, Coraline played by Shannyn Sossamon, his feelings fought to surface. And with the promise of a cure to become human, Mick strove to acquire it, granting his wish at a taste of mortality, but a taste that would only linger. A vampire mourning his humanity still walked under the moonlight and yearning to love the one that he cannot have.

John Amsterdam portrayed through Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the TV show, New Amsterdam was a man forever cursed to live forever. Granted the gift of immortality by a Native American girl, he has watched New York grow into the city that we know and love. He countlessly counted all his days sober, his dozens of girlfriends, and his 36 dogs. Only when his heart burst by the subway platform did he realize that his true love was near for the Native American girl told him that to break his curse, he must join with his true love. How would he find her in a city with millions of people? How would he tell her that he was the man that died on her operating table? In his quest to become human once more, Amsterdam lives as a New York police detective, meeting those that he once encountered and giving hope to those that he saves. As the hit song, From Yesterday by 30 Seconds to Mars says, "His face is a map of the world."

Television has found its Heroes. It has found its Journeyman. Now, it finds two men destined to live forever searching for a way to live only once, and as their stories unfold, we the viewers follow to know what lies ahead for two characters that have come and swept us up into their arms and into their world.

Damn. I knew I forgot one, and he's cute. I am thrilled that the WB has continued to pick up the Supernatural, and I'm hoping that they will look for more shows like it such as Moonlight, New Amsterdam, and Journeyman.

These are three great tv shows that should have been given a chance to remain on the air and grow. Great tv shows are not born overnight.

Great read! Never saw Amsterdam, but I am a HUGE fan of Moonlight. Hopefully WB can find a new station to pick it up. You also mentioned 3 of the main characters of Moonlight but what about Josef?

I'm sad that New Amsterdam has fallen away, but maybe Moonlight will remain, keeping us lingering on what lies ahead for Mick Saint John.

This is the first show in a long time that I find interesting. The plot is very clever. I was pleasantly surprised by it's complexity and the wonderful delivery by the actors. I think it is a winner.
