People go vegetarian for several reasons, such as , health, animal welfare, influence of family or friends, ethical reasons, environmental concerns and so on. The word vegetarian was not coined until 1847 by the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom, but the practice stretches way back to ancient Hindu teachings of 500 B.C.
The vegetarian community has contained many celebrities and other figures of importance. There have been authors and scientists through the ages, starting with Plato, Plutarch, Newton and contemporary vegetarian personalities like Kim Basinger, Martina Navratilova.
Some time ago, people questioned the reason to give up meat. Today, many of the same people want to know how they can go meatless. Many practicing vegetarians say that their transition was very easy. If you currently eat pasta, cereal, breads, beans, corn, rice, potato and mixed salads, you have a good start already.
Once you can stop associating the presence of meat with every dining occasion, and instead have vegetables, fruits and grains, you can start your own personal process toward breaking this all-important emotional connection.
After a month of not being weighed down by a load of fat and cholesterol, chances are you will find you would rather have some savory black bean dish, robust vegetarian chili, or a snappy stir-fry rather than a hot dog, steak or hamburger. Chances are you will find that you really do not miss meat as much as you thought.
In most new vegetarians, there is a strong sense of pride and accomplishment at setting a goal and then attaining it. Every week that you are able to stay with your vegetarian diet will make you feel better, both physically and emotionally.
Good health is a terrific reason to be a vegetarian, especially when several medical studies sung the praises of grains and vegetables diet and has recommended that we step up our fiber intake through vegetables, fruits, grains and beans while taking in less fat through meat and certain dairy products.
Grains and soybeans that are now fed to U.S livestock could feed 1.3 billion. To get one calorie of protein from beef, 78 calories of fossil fuel are expended. To get one calorie of protein from soybeans, two calories of fossil fuel are expended.
It is easy to see why a vegetarian diet is a friend to the environment. It requires fewer resources. Instead of growing grain to feed the animals you plan to eat, you just eat the grain. Even if these ecological concerns mean rather little to you at this time, or you are not interested in becoming a full-time vegetarian, but simply cutting back on how much meat you eat; you are still doing the earth some good.
Moreover, you do not have to only eat boring salad everyday. You have a huge array to choose, from pastas, beans, peas, beans of various varieties, root vegetables, cauliflowers, cabbage, broccoli, leafy vegetables and so on. As you adapt a vegetarian lifestyle, you begin to see the simplicity, fun and many rewards of being a vegetarian. You will discover that you will be giving up something, and you will be gaining more than you ever dreamed possible.
