Historical Birmingham-area tornado activity, according to city statistics, is above state average - 96 percent greater than the overall U.S. average, to be exact. It's 4.78 square miles and sits at 770 feet in elevation - with 3,981 people per square mile.

It was the birthplace of comedian David Spade and NBA player Shane Battier.

There are two cemeteries - Greenwood and Clover Hill Park - and one official stream/river/creek: the Sunken Bridge Drain. Greenbriar is the only campground.

As of July, 2009, the population was 19,018, down 1.4 percent since 2000. Females outnumber males 52.2 percent to 47.8 percent. The daytime population change due to commuting is at 5,269 (+27.3 percent); workers who live and work in the city comprise 19.3 percent, or 1,996.

Of the prevalent ancestries in the city, the top one is German (at 21.7 percent), followed by English (16.4 percent), Irish (16.3), Polish (9.1), Italian (6.9), and Scottish (6.2).

The most popular first names among the deceased were John, Mary, William, Robert, Helen, James, George, Margaret, Charles and Joseph - and the Helens and Marys had the longer life spans of the group at 82.4 years and 81.6. Now you really have something to talk about at the next neighborhood party, or the water cooler. Or, the Sunken Bridge Drain.
