More Children Die of SIDS on New Year's Day

If you consume large amount of alcohol while your child is an infant, studies show that your baby has a higher chance of dying from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome ).

Sociologist David Phillips of the University of California, San Diego, and his team investigated "129,090 SIDS cases in the United States from 1973 to 2006." This was the first time a study has been conducted to find correlations between alcohol and SIDS, and the result is alarming.

Even though SIDS has lessened by 50 percent since 1994, SIDS is the main cause of death for children who are age one month to one year. "Each year, more than 2,500 infants die as a result of SIDS, according to the American SIDS Institute."

Phillips and his team also found that more children die of SIDS on New Year's Day because their parents/guardians guzzled so much alcohol on New Year's Eve.

Even though this study cannot totally blame SIDS on parents' drinking, Phillips explained that parents may become more neglectful during their time of drinking. Thus, they are not functioning at their best.

Furthermore, these researchers also discovered that "African-American infants are twice as likely and Native American infants are about three times more likely to die of SIDS than white infants. More boys than girls fall victim to SIDS, according to KidsHealth.org."

This information is definitely imperative. Parents with infants have to be especially vigilant not to become alcoholics because the lives of their babies are at risk. It is extremely traumatic for parents to have to find their babies lifeless in their cribs; therefore, we have to keep studying about SIDS in order to prevent further infant mortalities.
