More on Finnish School Killer: 9 Dead, Including Gunman

Liz McD
On Wednesday, November 7th, an unnamed Finnish high school student opened fire and fatally shot seven of his classmates and a principal, before turning the gun on himself. Jokela High School is reeling with shock. Though gun ownership in Finland is common by European standards, gun violence is extremely rare. Witnesses say that the killer waved his .22 caliber handgun while shouting slogans about a "revolution," including "smash everything!"

Police are currently investigating disturbing YouTube videos, since removed from the site. On video was entitled "Joleka High School Massacre" and featured a young man wielding a handgun in the school. Another featured the same man performed target practice on an apple, and in yet another he held a handgun and wore a t-shirt bearing the slogan "humanity is overrated." The profile responsible for posting the videos contained a call for revolution.

Classmates say the gunman became more withdrawn recently, and a friend said he thought the 18-year-old was perhaps suffering from depression. "I couldn't imagine that in reality he would do anything like this."

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has declared a day of national mourning to honor those lost in this tragedy.
