SanDisk was the first to offer memory cards. Memory cards for phones and music players are much smaller than standard size memory cards. In fact, cell phone memory cards are just about the size of a chewing gum. But don't let their tiny form deceive you - these devices pack a punch.
Standard size memory cards are often used with digital cameras, hand-held devices, laptops, gaming consoles, GPS devices and other electronic devices.
To transfer files from your desktop computer to your memory card, you will need to plug in a card reader to the USB port of your computer. Card readers are cheap, and you can easily order one from an online store. Memory cards vary in storage capacity. Some are only able to store up to 64MB worth of data, while others can hold up to 4GB. Storage capacity has nothing to do with size, and there are standard size memory cards with only 1GB of storage capacity. On the other hand, there are micro mini memory cards that store up to 2GB of data.
There have been many brands of memory cards since SanDisk. These days, you can easily buy memory cards by Kingston, Samsung, and Toshiba. These brands are locking horns in competition, although not one is necessarily better than all the others. SanDisk is generally perceived to be a first-class brand, but this really isn't surprising since SanDisk pioneered the technology.
If you're looking for a memory card with a far larger storage capacity than what you're used to, here's some good news. SanDisk is already selling 16 GB micro SDHC cards. This storage card can be used with smartphones and Personal Digital Assistants.
The availability of 16BG memory cards is very good news for users of Treo 750, 755p smartphones and the Nokia Nseries. Rather than sticking to 4GB disks, they can switch to 16GB cards, thus allowing them to maximize the features of their phones, including internet access, file transfers, Instant Messaging, and Java-based games. The price of the 8GB SDHC is expected to decrease with the introduction of the 16GB micro SDHC.
The 16GB microSD is also one piece of good news for photographers. Now they can take as many pictures as they like and not have to worry about "maxing out" their memory cards.
