More Uses for Sponges

Deborah Anderson
Sponges are usually used for cleaning, especially house cleaning. They work great for dish washing and some are even made with a scrub side. The good thing about sponges is that they are very cheap. You can buy ten at your local dollar store for a buck. Since sponges are so cheap, you can afford to use them for more than just cleaning. The uses for sponges mentioned here work best with sponges that do not have the scrubby side.

A sponge can be used to reduce the vibration and noise that kitchen appliances can make. When these kitchen appliance start their vibrating and end up knocking on the wall behind them, it can get very noisy and annoying at the same time. One remedy for this problem is to take a dry sponge and put it between the appliance and the wall that it is knocking on.

Another use for a sponge is to seal envelopes. This is not a new use as many people already do it, but it is definitely worth repeating. Not everyone enjoys licking stamps or envelopes, especially if there are many of them to do. Place a sponge in a jar lid then add water. Now all you have to do is swipe the stamp or envelop across the wet sponge.

Do you have a varmint problem in your yard? Not everyone does, but if you do how would you get them to move somewhere else? Luckily this is another job for a cheap sponge. Simply make a trip to the dollar store and buy sponges and household ammonia. Soak the sponges in the household ammonia then strategically place the soaked sponges in areas where you have seen the varmints or where you suspect they may hang out.

Have you decided to tile a floor in your house? If so, you may want to invest in some knee pads. Ok have you priced knee pads lately? Thank goodness sponges can be used as knee pads. No I am not talking about taking a sponge and duct tape and taping the sponge to your leg. You can take an old pair of pants, or two, and sew a pocket on each knee of the pants. Now a sponge in each pocket and you have made yourself some knee pads.

Kids can also have fun with sponges. Sponges can be cut into different shapes and can be used for toys. Finger painting can be fun with sponges or sponges can be used as building blocks. Lots of room for imagination and fun to combine and occupy the kids in your life.
