More Weight Loss Shows Will Saturate TV Networks

Move Over 'Biggest Loser' and 'Celebrity Fit Club'

A couple of nights ago I watched the first few episodes of Kirstie Alley's new reality show and while it was entertaining at times, I realized that it was another former star trying to use a reality show to revive her career. There is absolutely nothing new or unique about this show. She is just smart enough to know that the topic of weight loss is huge these days and with shows like The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Fit Club bringing in high ratings, it only seems fitting that Kirstie Alley try to capitalize on the weight loss show craze.

There are a couple of benefits that Kirstie's show offers. First off, it shows that even people who have a lot of money are not invincible to health and image problems. The idea that celebrities will always have flawless images may start to wane as shows like this show that stars go through some of the same problems as some other 'ordinary' Americans do. Perhaps if Americans see these stars going though the process to lose the pounds then they will feel more inclined to do the same.

Within the last decade or so, weight loss shows have taken over and aired on several major cable networks. In addition to NBC's The Biggest Loser, VH1's Celebrity Fit Club, and Oxygen's Dance Your Ass Off, there are upcoming new shows like 100 Lost, Losing It, and Thintervention. Here is a brief profile of these new upcoming weight loss shows:

100 Lost:

As of October of 2009, Examiner.com announced that an unnamed cable network was looking for two teams of people who would compete to lose 100 pounds. Essentially, whichever team lost it first would win. Teams would have a chance to bet their own money. There is no set date of release as of this time.

Losing It With Jillian Michaels:

Jillian Michaels, who was a trainer in Biggest Loser, will star in this new weight loss show. She will move in with a family who needs to lose weight and become healthier. Celebrity chef Curtis Stone will also be on the show and will help the family eat right. According to iCelebZ.com, Losing It will air on NBC on June 1st at 10 pm ET.

Thintervention:

Jackie Warner, who is a celebrity personal trainer in the hit Bravo show Work Out, will star in Thintervention (according to Examiner). She will work "with people in their real lives with work and family." In each hour long episode, Warner will provide a tough workout, will offer a therapy session to get down to the underlying factors that led to their weight problems, and teach people how to eat healthy. There is no set date as of this time.

Keep tuned for the latest updates as the air dates are released. Once the shows air, I will keep everyone informed of what happens.

Will the magazine, newspaper & TV industries please quit harping about weight & fat people? Even thin people are sick of it! Particularly as you age, no amount of harping on it day after day is going to help or make anyone feel better about themselves. Isn't life grim enough without being constantly reminded the world considers you a "failure" if you are not thin (all counched as "healthy" when we all know that 20% above ideal weight is healthier than being too thin!)! The media takes everything to excess, ad nauseum, until all we can do is turn off the TV and stop reading. You are not helping anyone...find a new and more uplifting subject, please!!!
