Internet Discussions on Mormonism

Seth Waite
So many people that follow Mormonism have seen what I am talking about. A blog, website, or social page showing anti-Mormon or Mormon doctrines and then a host of discussion and bickering below in the comments section. Here are some of the challenges that bloggers must remember when discussing religion.

Wikipedia Education of Mormonism

The problem is whether all of the many questions on the internet about Mormons can be answered in a blog post. There are tons of questions about Mormonism because very few people are willing to really learn about it. Most people would rather consider themselves experts by getting a Wikipedia (or other internet encyclopedia) education on Mormonism and then go around claiming expertise. This is not the case.

It takes time, just as anything important does. You would not consider yourself an expert on the Napoleonic Wars just because you read an article or two about it would you? It takes many, many books, discussions, prayers, and ultimately answers from the one true source, God. Then you will have learned that you have just begun to answer some of life's most important questions. Mormonism cannot be sipped like a refreshing/bitter drink. It must be gulped and consumed continuously. So the lack of knowledge by many bloggers limits the quality and accuracy of Mormon discussion.

Christian Title

Another challenge is that much of the debate online about Mormonism is centered around whether Mormons are Christian. I believe that Mormonism is compatible with Christianity. But, it depends on what you clarify Christianity as. If a belief in Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and Redeemer makes me Christian, which I feel it does, then I am definitely Christian. If it means believing exactly like the Protestants, Catholics, or Orthodoxy then no I don't fit with their beliefs. Matter of fact, they don't really agree on a lot of doctrine either.

There are many different believers in Jesus Christ throughout the "Christian" world that I find it ironic that Mormonism isn't accepted as one of them. We are probably far closer to Christianity then many "Christian" churches that you would easily place the title upon. Being Christian comes down to loving, understanding, and respecting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer. It includes knowing that He died on the cross and was resurrected. I wrote a short article about my conversion to Christ through Mormonism: Faith and Grace: My Mormon Experience

So because I am Mormon that does not mean I am not christian. After studying the Bible, The Book of Mormon and modern revelations to Prophets you will believe that Jesus is the Christ. The Son of God.

Many of the challenges with debate in Mormonism come from a lack of context because of knowledge (on both sides) and no clear reference point on how the blogger who writes for or against Mormonism is claiming Mormonisms Christianity or lack of.
