Morning Star Farms Vegetarian Bacon

I can hear people saying that bacon and vegetarian are two words that don't go together. Who has ever heard of vegetarian bacon anyway? I have been eating vegetarian bacon since I was six years old, and can verify that it is OK to eat. A brand that I have recently been using is Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon.

Morning Star was originally Worthington Foods, which is a company owned by the Seventh Day Adventists. The Seventh Day Adventists have a wonderful health message and encourages their members to be vegetarians. The company was bought out by Morning Star and since they have added many items to their menu. The Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon has been around the longest.

Of course the bacon is made from soy bean protein. They use flavoring and other ingredients to add to the taste to make it seem more like real bacon. The wonderful thing about the bacon strips are that they don't shrink up when cooking, like meat bacon would. What you see, is what you get. You can either bake, fry, or microwave the bacon. When micro waving, cook it like you would traditional bacon, on a microwave bacon plate with paper towling or a cover over it. If you don't cover it, it will taste rubbery. It may not be too great for your health, but the best way to have it is to fry it in a tablespoon of oil. Of course the Morning Star bacon tastes different than regular bacon, but it is a wonderful flavor. Even my picky teenager loves Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon.

The bacon is a bit expensive though, running almost four dollars for about 12 slices. But when you think about it, regular bacon costs that much or more. But you must remember that you don't lose bacon through cooking, as there is no grease to lose.

The Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon of course has less fat than meat bacon. In fact, it has no saturated fats, which are the harmful kinds. It only has mono saturated fats from the soy beans. It also has less calories than regular bacon, having only 70 calories per two slices. I love to cook my Morning Star Vegetarian bacon in an omelet, breaking it up into little bits, sort of like bacon bits. In eggs, you can't tell it is vegetarian. I have even used the bacon to make snacks before, wrapping the bacon around sausages. I cook it a bit in the microwave first, then wrap it with a toothpick around sausages or meatballs. I also have used the Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon on bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches. The taste tends to get lost, so I have discovered it is best if you put a little extra bacon on your sandwich.

I don't have to worry about the Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon growing old, as it has no meat products in it. Once I open the container, i do put the remained in a Tupperware container. But once opened, it can last for weeks.

I would highly recommend buying the Morning Star Vegetarian Bacon. It is well worth the money. If you aren't use to eating vegetarian meat, it might take a while to get used too, but once you do, you probably will thing regular bacon is too greasy. The added benefit is that you are eating less fat and fewer calories.
