A while back I decided to try some new products from MorningStar Farms. This is a brand that I have been eating for several years now and many of their products are some of my favorite vegetarian and vegan food products. They were what I would call a fun treat because they were a little expensive, or at least as expensive as those types of products generally are, and so I knew that I would be paying a lot for a little amount. This is really my only complaint that I have about such vegetarian and vegan single meals. The two new products that I tired were MorningStar Farms Sesame Chik'n and Chik'n Enchiliada. I already wrote a review on the Sesame Chik'n and here is my review on the Chik'n Enchiliada.
The MorningStar Farms Chik'n Enchiliada was a single serving entr©e that cost around $3.00. If you find them on sale the box is only $2.50. I would not say that it was a full lunch or anything, which is why I assume they call it an entr©e. When I had it, I did not have anything else and I was pretty hungry not too long after eating it. For this reason I would not recommend eating it by itself for lunch or dinner. If you are hoping to get a great taste, I would not recommend this either. Honestly the taste was good, but I did not feel that it was anything like the fresh enchiladas that my mom can make, but it is pretty good as far as frozen dishes go. Since, the taste was not excellent I hoped to find some good nutrition facts at least.
I was not surprised at the ingredients and nutrition facts of MorningStar Farms Chik's Enchilada. The first listed ingredients were water, long grain brown rice that has been cooked in water, whole kernel corn, and black beans cooked in water. Next listed was tortilla that was made of bleached flour that consisted of wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, and folic acid, water, ground corn treated with lime, vegetable shortening consisting of soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil and/or palm oil, salt, leavening made of sodium bicarbonate, cornstarch, sodium aluminum sulfate, calcium sulfate, and monocalcium phosphate, calcium proprionate, sorbic acid, fumeric acid, cellulose gum, datem, enzyme blend, and sodium metabisulfite. Next veggie chik'n was listed and it consisted of water, isolated soy protein, vital wheat gluten, natural flavors, pea protein, carrot fiber, organic beet root fiber, organic evaporated cane juice, yeast extract, and sea salt. Then onions, tomato paste, mozzarella cheese made of pasteurized part-skim milk, cheese cultures, salt and enzymes, red bell peppers, and green peppers were listed. Finally the enchilada contains two percent or less of cheddar cheese made from pasteurized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, calcium chloride, and annatto color, green onions, spices, green chiles consisting of green chile peppers, water, salt, citric acid, and calcium chloride, expeller pressed canola oil, rice starch, chili pepper, roasted garlic, modified corn starch, salt, and lime juice concentrate. The nutrition facts were much simpler.
Even though the entr©e was not very filling there were 280 calories with 60 calories from fat in the MorningStar Farms Chik'n Enchilada. Additionally it had 520 milligrams of sodium, 510 milligrams of potassium, 47 grams of carbohydrates, 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of sugars, and 12 grams protein. Also, there was 15% listed for both calcium and iron. Considering the type of food item this was I think that both ingredients and nutrition facts are pretty standard. I think that homemade enchililadas would be a lot better for you to eat and a lot cheaper for you to make. Not to mention they would taste better. With all of this in mind I decided that MorningStar Fams Chil'n Enchilada was a nice snack and a fun one time treat. I would be tempted to get it again if it was on sale and I was really craving enchiladas, which happens from time to time, and I would recommend for anyone to give it a try if they are like frozen enchiladas.
