The Russian metro system that spans the Russian capital was the target of terrorist acts on Monday, March 29, 2010. Moscow's metro station transports 7 million people in a day. Russia's metro system is the second most heavily ridden metro system in the world. Tokyo's metro is the most heavily used subway system in the world.

Two Metro Station Blasts in Moscow

According to BBC news, at least 37 people are reported to have died in the Metro station explosion in central Moscow at the Lubyanka station. The blasts happened inside the carriage of a metro train around 8 a.m. and reportedly killed passengers and people on the platform. The second explosion in Moscow's metro station happened around 8:40 a.m. at Park Kultury in the southwest part of Moscow. The casualties from the second blast are estimated to be approximately 15 people. The Russian Federal Security Service or FSB, which succeeded the KGB, is located above Moscow's Lubyanka subway station. The second blast hit the Park Kultury metro station causing the Russian metro system to shut trains down in Moscow due to the threat of more attacks.

According to Fox News, the death count is at 41 after the two explosions in Moscow's metro station. Fox reported 26 were killed and 15 injured after the first blast. The terrorists responsible for the bombings in Moscow's metro stations have been identified as two female suicide bombers. The terrorist groups from Russia's North Caucasus, a growing Islamic insurgency terrorist group, are suspected as the terrorist group responsible for the blasts in the metro station on March 29.

Moscow Metro Station Blasts of the Past

The Russian capital, Moscow has been hit with a string of deadly explosions by militants over the last decade but the terrorist attacks have decreased in recent years. In February of 2004, approximately 41 people were killed and over 130 injured after a blast in a crowded metro car in Moscow was bombed by terrorists. The Associated Press reported that the last terrorist attack happened in August 2004 and killed 10 people when a suicide bomber blew up outside of a Russian busy subway station.
