Ten Commandments Craft
Ask the children to cut two tablets out of gray construction paper. Then cut to slightly smaller tablets out of white paper, and glue them to the gray construction paper. Write five commandments on the first tablet and five commandments on the second tablet.
Story
After traveling in the desert for about 3 months, the Israelites came to Mount Sinai. Moses decided to go up the mountain to talk to God.
Three days after Moses talked to God a large rumbling and a flash of light appeared over the mountain. Everyone who was still sleeping woke up. Over the mountain there was now a thick cloud with lighting and thunder, and the mountain shook from the sound of trumpets. The mountain trembled and the people were afraid.
Moses went up the mountain again to hear the word of God. God told Moses, "Go down to the people and tell them not to follow you up the mountain, the mountain is a special place because I am here." Moses warned the Israelites not to go close to the mountain.
After telling the Israelites the message the God had given him, he went up the mountain once again. This time he stayed for 40 days. This time God gave Moses the Ten Commandments written on two stone tablets. Each tablet had five laws written on it, which told the Jews how God wanted them to behave.
These are the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-20):
1) Don't pray to any god except for Me.
2) Don't make statues or pictures and bow down to them.
3) Do not take the Lord's name in vain.
4) Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
5) Honor your father and your mother.
6) Do not kill.
7) Do not commit adultery.
8) Do not steal.
9) Do not lie.
10) Do not wish for your neighbor's things.
He told Moses that if the people obey His commandments, the nation of the Israelites would be great and holy in His sight.
