Most Abused Yu-Gi-Oh Cards in the Current Game

What Makes a Card Powerful? What Would Place One Card in Higher Demand Then Another?

Robert Guinn
If you play the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG then you know about the current play environment. You see the same decks over and over again, and the same cards being played repeatedly, but there are those few cards that go beyond annoying and reach the realm of broken! Those cards that will win a game for you in a single turn reduce your opponent to tears and push you over the edge to victory. These cards are the most powerful and overused cards in the game and you know we all use them, or would if we had them why? Simple, because as long as it's legal we put it in a deck. So here is a list of the top ten most played and abused cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG

10) Spirit Reaper is a nasty card that annoys the heck out of everyone. It has extremely low attack power at only 300 but has two amazing effects. On one hand it can't die as a result of battle, saving your hide in a tight spot, or two it can deplete your opponents hand if you attack directly. Not hard to pull off and we all know how key hand control is during a match. Making this card even stronger are its type and attribute, Spirit Reaper is a Dark Zombie adding to his power and playability.

9) Cyber Dragon can be a deadly monster at anytime, however if you draw him in the early game your setting very pretty. Cyber Dragon is a great card by itself, 2100 attack for one tribute, and he's a machine allowing Cyber Dragon to use key machine oriented cards like Seven Complete, and Limiter Removal. What makes this card mean though is the special ability it has. If you don't currently have a monster on your side of the field then you can play Cyber Dragon from your hand with no cost, and it counts as a special summon! Meaning on turn one you could play Cyber Dragon, and Goblin Elite Attack Force, filling your field with formidable adversaries early on.

8) Mystic Space Typhoon is one of those cards that everyone hates to see. Magic always trumps trap cards as far as being user friendly, but not only does this card come with a great effect, you can also play it from your hand! Mystic Space Typhoon knocks out your opponents set magic and trap cards plus it has the added ability of being quick play, so you can use it on your opponents turn as well.

7) Sakuretsu Armor is like a mini Mirror Force. You opponent pays a heavy price for his wayward attack by losing his monster, so needless to say this card sees a lot of play in almost every deck. The drawback oh this trap is in the sheer fact that it is a trap, meaning cards like Royal Decree and Jinzo can put an easy stop to its effect, but this card is devastating in 90% of matches. The beauty is you can take out a powerhouse monster like Cyber End Dragon just by flipping this awesome card and watch your opponent cry as their beast goes down.

6) Pot of Avarice is like our old and dearly missed Pot of Greed, but a lot better. Pot of Avarice has the draw power of its predecessor but with the ability to regenerate valuable cards back into your deck. This ability may become key in late game when you need to reuse cards like Mirror Force, Zaborg, and Swords of Reviling Light. Also it delays those few deck that attempt to run your cards out. There are a few variations and don't often see play at large events, but they are out there, and they fear the Pot f Avarice.

5) Mobius the Frost Monarch is just an all around great card. He requires one tribute to play, and has the effect of killing two cards in your opponents Magic/Trap zone. This can devastate an opponent who had a couple of traps lying in wait, now their left wondering how they can beat a 2400 attacker lacking their crafty traps now lying in the graveyard!

4) Zaborg the Thunder Monarch is not unlike his brother Morbius, he requires one tribute and attacks for 2400, a powerhouse to be sure but what pushes him a step ahead on the top 10 is his effect. When Zaborg comes onto the field, another monster automatically meets his end, allowing for Zaborg to have a beefy shot at your foe's life points. Another positive effect is Zarborg can target strategically what monster to get rid of; perhaps the biggest threat on the field is not your opponents Jinzo, but rather his facedown monster? Zaborg is just a handful to deal with.

3) Jinzo has widely been discussed as one of the best cards in the game, and certainly the most useful monster. Jinzo is a 2400 attacker for the cost of one tribute, but his attribute, type and effect are what give him the edge. Jinzo is a machine, so cards like Seven Complete and Limiter Removal are a great addition to his power. Plus he's a Dark creature further adding to his playability. Above all though is Jinzo's effect, as long as he remains on the field no trap cards can be activated... wow, with one single card your opponent looses a quarter of his deck, you do as well but you can plan around Jinzo while your opponent may be thrown off guard. One move that really gets an opponent mad is playing Call of the Haunted, bringing back Jinzo. Because Call of the Haunted was activated before Jinzo was on the field it's able to be used, and then Jinzo negates the effect of Call of the Haunted meaning even if the card is destroyed Jinzo remains in play.

2) Swords of Revealing Light is not as often played like in the early days of the game; however I think it is a game saving card, not game winning, game saving. Swords of Revealing Light stalls three turns and can pull you out of a tight spot, allowing you to reassess your current situation. You get three turns to draw something useful to put you back into the game.

1) Mirror Force makes my number 1 spot, did you have any doubt? This card has jumped from the banned restricted list, then off the list and back on so many times it's just not funny. Personally I think the card is way to powerful, but that's why it's here at number one. Your opponent might be winning by 2000 life points, you may be left with only a single monster on your field, staring down Cyber End Dragon, Zaborg, Mobius, Goblin elite Attack Force and Satellite Cannon, your opponent knows this game is over but you have a trump card, they attack you play mirror force they all die you shake opponents hand and say "Good game" This card has the single most critical game changing effect known in the entire realm of Yu-Gi-Oh, and thus Mirror Force is my pick for the most over played and abused card in the game

All the cards reviewed are tournament legal in the current format. Many cards were not featured on this list due to them being banned by Upperdeck Unlimited. Otherwise Cyber Stein would have made number one, more one turn kill, or OTK, decks were spawned off that card then I can count, so yes there was a card more broken then Mirror Force, and that's hard to believe!

It's funny how everyone is constantly posting cards like 'Dark Armed Dragon', and 'Judgment Dragon', when they could look at the date this was posted, and think : "Hey, these cards I'm about to suggest haven't come out yet!"

Thats a pretty good list but you have some errors. First of all, you have the effect of pot of avarice wrong. You can only retreive monsters with it's effect not spell or traps. Second, you are missing some VERY key cards being abused in the current metagame now. Those would be allure of darkness, emergency teleport, solemn judgment, judgment dragon and the fearsome, dark armed dragon. Third, you are missing some other obviously broken cards. Torrential tribute, exiled force, d.d. warrior lady, scapegoat, sangan... the list goes on. Hope my tips help :)

where is the Allure? and Disk Commander >_> and DMoC. and Limit Reverse :/ and Dark Armed dragon :/ Mole is not broken. as it requires a normal summon. and can leave you empty. :/

I think Raiza the Storm Monarch and Phoenix Wing Wind Blast cuz' they send an opponent's card to the top of their deck, opens up their field, AND makes their topdeck card garbage. Easily two game winning cards.

Neo-Spacian Grand Mole and Don Zaloog in my opinion are very broken cards.

Mausoleum of the Emperor is an ultamite card! It should've been at least in the top 5!

  • Brand12/26/2007

Cyberdark Dragon is a good card, too. You should've put it there!

  • Brand 12/26/2007

Negate Attack should definetly be on there!

  • retired10/29/2007
