The vast majority of auto accidents are fender benders, which will leave you with a dent in your bumper, along with some internal tweaking as well. If the other driver is at fault, by all means, submit a claim, because his insurance will pay for it, not yours.
If, however, you are equally at fault, you can consider not submitting a claim. The repairs will likely only be about $1000, and if you have a $500 deductible, the insurance company will only have to pay $500. You will more than pay for it in increased premiums over the next few years.
Common Car Insurance Claim: Windshield Replacement
If a rock hits your windshield and a large crack develops, you can submit a car insurance claim if you have comprehensive coverage. However, there are ways to prevent making the claim. As soon as you notice a crack developing, take it in to have it sealed. Your windshield won't be perfect, but it will stop the crack from spreading so you won't need to replace your windshield.
Common Car Insurance Claim: Vandalism or Theft
Another common car insurance claim is one due to vandalism or theft. You should know, however, that property inside your car that is stolen or damaged (stereo system, CD's, and other peripherals) is not covered by your auto insurance policy. Check your homeowners or renters insurance policy to see if they provide coverage for these items.
Common Car Insurance Claim: Crash Involving Injuries
Unfortunately, many auto accidents cause injuries, which will require a larger claim and insurance settlement. If you have been injured in an accident for which another driver is at fault, you will need to write an auto insurance settlement letter detailing the injury and associated expenses.
Common Car Insurance Claim: Natural Disaster
One more common claim is due to natural disasters such as fire or hail. Some minor damage such as small hail that leaves dents might be best to just live with, but other damage could go as far as totaling your car. For these types of claims, it is important to have documentation of the event (reports of the home fire, or likewise) to make the claim.
