Are you an extreme type of athlete? Are you a mountain biking fanatic looking for your next adventure? If you are on the island of Oahu, then have I got just the place for you. This is actually a trail that I have only done a few times in my life, because it is so tough to maneuver, but is very much worth it once you get going. One of things you need to do before heading out there is to pack extra gear in case you get stuck or crash. One important thing to remember is that you will want to go with at least one other person. This is not the kind of trail you want to go about alone. Besides with two people you can pack more stuff.

The first piece of advice I am going to give you is to be very well hydrated as you will be in the sun the entire time and you can only carry so much water with you and believe me you are going to need it. The trail starts at Kaena point. Kaena point comes to a dead end at the end of the road in Mokuleia. You can either park at the beach park in Mokuleia, which is several miles away and bike in or park along the side of the road and bike in.

The trail winds from Mokuleia on one side of the Kaala mountain range to the other side in the town of Waianae. The trail is very treacherous and rocky and it is easy to get a flat tire, so it is very important that you carry an extra tube, pump and tire patches. Otherwise you will find yourself walking for at least an hour to get back to the main roadway. Once you are on the trail you will witness a part of Hawaii that many do not see. You will see many native birds and plants and can also see the island of Kauai from this area. It may be a good idea to pack a camera to take pictures as well. You will also want to pack some food like energy bars, fruits like bananas and ice water.

This trail is for someone who is in shape and has done a fair amount of biking. The trail calls for the heavy use of the leg and back muscles to get out of tight spots and the constant jarring of the terrain on the body. If you are up to it, it is a trail that you will most definitely enjoy, but can be a horrible experience if you are ill prepared.
