Most Hated Internet Terms!

And believe it or not, traditional chat lingo ( lol, lmao, brb) are NOT on the list!

I am online a minimum of 12 hours a day. Quite possibly more- and it always amazes me when people I come across are NOT online that much ( some people don't even check their email every day- the HORROR!)

But, along with instant access to breaking news, silly forwards from your friends, and the ever dreaded chain email, comes a "dumbing down" of society as a whole. One of the most noticeable things to come of this, is a new language of sorts - a "netology" if you will. A language in which our grandparents, and possibly parents, would be lost and have no clue as to what is being talked about. And in case any of those folks somehow meander across this article, I am including definitions.

Number one on the list ( based on a survey from UK pollsters at YouGov)...Folksonomy (refers to a group of people cooperating spontaneously to organize information into categories)

and following that...

Blogosphere ( the collective term encompassing all blogs as a community or social network.)

Blog (A weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption - think of the old fashioned diaries our grandmothers kept, only these are MEANT to be read by others)

Netiquette (a catch-all term for the conventions of politeness and respect recognized online)

Blook (a printed book whose content was originally posted on a blog.)

Webinar (used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the Internet)

Vlog ( video blog, or a blog containing video)

Social Networking (a category of websites with profiles, semi-persistent public commentary on the profile, and friends ( whether online only or irl (in real life) who come and socialize together online ( ie: myspace, facebook, etc.)

Cookie ( A small text file of information that certain Web sites attach to a user's hard drive while the user is browsing the Web site)

And last, but certainly not least...

Wiki ( A website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively)

Now really, a survey of this type is not scientific and will not make its way into any trade publications. It is, more or less, a collaboration of peoples pet peeves.
And as its a slow news day, I will embark on my own netology peeves...

People who use chat lingo outside of chat venues. ANY chat lingo. As much as I use "lol", even I try and refrain from using it outside of IM's and emails.

people who don't know what netiquette is but are online and trying to socialize anyways.

those who think that the people they "meet" in chat rooms and online are their "real" friends

the list could go on, but you get the point! But for now, I must go blog about my day, and hang out at myspace, making sure to mind my netiquette and then, when my day is done, clear the cookies from my PC.
