Most Likely 2010 Fantasy Football Busts

JM Van Horn
As we began the countdown until our 2010 fantasy football drafts, prospective owners not only being to contemplate who will be the breakout players, but the players who will be busts as well. Here are five players every fantasy football owner would be wise to steer clear of.

Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos)

In his first season as the quarterback, Orton posted career numbers with an 86.8 qb rating while completing 62.1 percent of his passes for 3,802 yards with 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Despite this and as he enters a contract year, the Denver Broncos decided to draft Tim Tebow in the first round and bringing in Brady Quinn.

This should show us that team management does not have any faith in Orton. You should expect to see Orton benched the moment his performance on the field begins to dip. As a result, Orton is going to be one of the first 2010 fantasy football busts by Week 6.

Marion Barber (Dallas Cowboys)

Remember when a few years ago, everyone thought Marion Barber was going to take over the role as the primary running back in Dallas? Well things have changed with the newest flavor, Felix Jones, garnering all of the attention to be the lead back for the Cowboys.

Despite Barber leading the team in rushing in 2009, he only managed 932 yards on 214 carries. What is even more depressing is his 4.4 yards per carry or that his longest run of the season was 35 yards?

The only bright spot is Barber will get the ball inside the five so he has a chance to rack up 7 touchdowns again. Just don't expect him to break 1,000 yards.

Barber's time has come and gone and you should only pick up this 2010 fantasy football bust as your third running back at best.

Braylon Edwards (New York Jets)

When the Jets acquired Edwards from the Browns during the 2009 season, the Jet faithful began to think that their prayers had been answered. They finally had a wide receiver that could stretch the field and make the big play.

While he did lead the Jets with four receiving touchdowns, he did little else in the way of securing the number one wide receiver role. By the time the season was over, he hauled in 35 receptions and 541 yards to go along with the touchdowns.

In fact, wide receiver Jericho Cotchery was the teams' most productive wide receiver and looks ready to carry the role again in 2010. Edwards at best is a number two wide on a team that prefers to run the ball first.

If you want to take a chance on this 2010 fantasy football bust, do not pick up Edwards until you have two or three solid wide receivers to make sure your team remains productive on a week to week basis.

DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia Eagles)

When the Philadelphia Eagles decided to make the push for the future by trading away Donovan McNabb, they failed to realize that it will be affecting the entire offensive side.

One of those players who will be affected by this is Jackson, who benefited from the long play in 2009. He led the team with 1,167 receiving yards to go along with his 63 receptions and nine touchdowns. The problem for 2010 is that Jackson will have an especially hard time maintaining the 18.5 yards per reception.

If you want to avoid taking this 2010 fantasy football bust, Santana Moss from the Washington Redskins should and would be a better option for most teams.

Greg Olsen (Chicago Bears)

In 2009 fantasy football owners, who owned Olsen, were salivating when quarterback Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears. And they had good reason to.

They saw his numbers increase to 60 receptions for 612 yards and 6 touchdowns while earning him a spot as one of the top ten tight ends in the game.

Despite the ranking, owners should be labeling Olsen as a fantasy football bust for the upcoming 2010 season. The main reason for this decision is because Mike Martz is the newest offensive coordinator in the Windy City.

Martz has never been one to use the tight end position to its full potential. If you still want to take a chance on Olsen, wait until the later rounds to pick him up, if you must. You would be better off chasing after a sleeper selection, like Zach Miller from the Raiders.

I had bought into the Hype too around Barber and was burned last year. Good luck in the Fantasy Draft. I have been participating in football for about eight years I think and have enjoyed every season.

I remember all the hype about Marion Barber and how good he was for a year or so.. even had a catchy nickname to boot. Nice article too. I'll keep these in mind for my fantasy draft coming up. Never been in a fantasy football league so we'll have to see how that goes.
