Most Memorable Household Help on TV

Doug Poe
Good help, apparently, has always been hard to find. Perhaps that statement is true in real life, but not on television. Many people who can afford maids or butlers would love to have some of the following famous characters attending to doors or sweeping carpets.

Most of these household service providers were written into their shows as minor characters in the roles of comic relief. A few of them, though, actually starred in the sitcom or were so popular they were given their own shows.

Here are the most recognizable members of household help from television sitcoms.

10. Lynn Belvedere from "Mr. Belvedere" - Portrayed by Christopher Hewitt, this Englishman helped the maintain order in the home of sportswriter George Owens (played by Bob Uecker).

9. Florence Johnston from "The Jeffersons" - As George and his wife were moving on up to the east side, they needed someone to attend to their household chores. They hired Florence (played by Marla Gibbs), who turned about to be a great sarcastic foil to George (played by Sherman Hemsley).

8. Edna Garrett from "Different Strokes" - Before managing the girls in "Facts of Life" Mrs. Garrett (played by Charlotte Rae) helped Mr. Drummond (played by Conrad Bain) care for Arnold, Willis, and their sister.

7. Tony Micelli from "Who's the Boss?" - The former baseball player (played by Tony Danza) keeps house and helps handle the son as well as the mother of advertising executive Angela Bower (played by Judith Light).

6. Florida Evans from "Maude" - Before taking on the more serious task of raising J.J., Michael and Telma with their father James in "Good Times," Florida cooked up plenty of sharp humor at the expense of the snobbish Maude.

5. Benson DuBois from "Soap" - He eventually landed his own show and even ran for office, but the sarcastic Benson (played by Robert Guillame) first helped manage a home on the sitcom "Soap."

4. Mr. French from "Family Affair" - Sebastian Cabot played Uncle Bill's original household assistant with poise, professionalism, and occasional humor. After he left the series, his brother (played by John Williams) began watching over Buffy, Jody and Sissy for executive Bill Davis (played by Brian Keith).

3. Rosie from "The Jetsons" - This robot (voiced by Jean Vander Pyl) was the family maid in the animated series, though there probably wasn't much for her to do. Futuristic machines took care of all the chores.

2. Alice from "The Brady Bunch" - Probably the most popular household service employee, Alice Nelson (played by Ann B. Davis) cooked for and cleaned up after six kids in this story of a man named Brady (played by Robert Reed).

1. Lurch from "The Addams Family" - The butler (played by Ted Cassidy) for this creepy and kooky family was a very strong man, whose signature line became "You rang" whenever he was summoned by Gomez (played by John Astin).

Great stuff. I enjoyed all these shows and the 'household help' were all great. I liked Fran Drescher as The Nanny, too, but I guess she wasn't household help, per se.
