Most Natural Methods for Healing Sun Burns

Sarah Rachel
We all know that getting too much sun without protection like sun block can result in sun burns. Sun burns are the result of extreme damage to the skin. Over a prolonged period of time, and too many sun burns can make a person more susceptible to skin cancer later on in life. I live in Arizona, and the sun is always a concern for my family. I do what I can to protect them from the sun by slathering on mineral based sun screens, wearing protective clothing, glasses and hats. However, despite my best efforts there have been a few occasions where sun burns needed to be treated. For instance, just a few weeks ago my husband and father in law took my 2 year old son on a camping trip up in the mountains. My little boy came home to me with a sun burn on his ears and face. My husband couldn't find the sun block, so Jacob went without protection all weekend long. Yet, I wasn't too worried because I had a few natural tricks up my sleeve, and Jacob's sun burn healed very quickly.

1). Aloe Vera gel- Always use 100% pure aloe vera gel when dealing with sun burns. Aloe is one of the most powerful plants on the planted, which has been used for thousands of years to help heal cuts burns, and other injuries. The skin drinks it in and the gel penetrates without irritation. Aloe Vera gel can also help to prevent scarring, and other damage to the skin.

2). Herbal Bath Soaks- Herbal bath soaks can help to soothe and heal the skin because the beneficial healing herbs absorb through the skin in the bath. Soaking in a bath can also help a person to relax which in turn will reduce tension. The best herbs to use are chamomile bath oil, and eucalyptus bath oil. You can buy these at your local health food store.

4). Cucumbers- Using cucumbers to help soothe and heal sun burns has been very effective in our household. Cucumbers have natural antiseptic and soothing properties. Just put 2 cucumbers in a juicer and apply the juice directly the skin.

5). Cool Compress- Applying a cool compress can help to soothe the skin by cooling it down. It doesn't need to be icy cold, just cool and relaxing. We have also soaked a cool compress in cucumber juice and used it that way as well. The cold compress has a very soothing effect on the skin.
