There is a big difference in the spread of names. For example, the top three male names were each given to over four million people, the following three names (names 4-6) to over three million people, the following four to over two million and the rest to over one million.
However, the number one girl name was given to over three million people with the following 8 (names 2-9) to over one million people, names 10-15 to over 900 thousand, names 16-19 are given to over 800 thousand and number 20 is given to over 700 thousand.
Boys names tend to group up around a few incredibly popular names while girl names have a much wider distribution. Five of the top 12 boys names are still in the top twelve today. These names are Michael, Daniel, Christopher, Joseph and William. The only female name in the top twelve of the 20th century which is still in the top twelve today is Elizabeth. Many of the top female names of the 20th century are almost unheard of today. Parents seem to be far more traditional in picking male names than female names.
