Top 10 Cat Breeds Around the World

Ann Fritts
The Bengal leads the list of most popular cats in the world, says The International Cat Association (TICA). The group released its list of most popular cats based on registrations it has received for various breeds through the end of 2009.

The Bengal originated when an Asian leopard cat was crossed with a domestic cat, resulting in cats that often look like little leopards. Bengals led TICA's list of most popular cats in 2009 for the second year in a row. TICA says it had registered 6,264 Bengal cats and 4,489 Bengal litters around the world by the end of 2009. Bengals are active, intelligent cats who are medium to large in size. While they come in several colors and patterns, TICA says the brown/black spotted is the most popular.

The ragdoll cat came in second on the list of most popular cats, with 3,829 cats and 2,974 litters registered. Ragdolls are large cats with medium-length hair who are known for their blue eyes and affectionate nature. TICA says these cats may not reach their full size until they are four years old, when males will weigh up to 20 pounds and females up to 15.

The Maine coon ranked third among the cat breeds. The Maine coon is a long-haired cat native to America and known for its family friendliness. TICA notes that Maine coons don't stop growing until they are three to five years old, and a mature male's weight averages 13 to 18 pounds, with females averaging up to 13 pounds.

Other felines making the top 10 list of most popular cats are:

4. Sphynx: a medium-sized cat known for its bald appearance

5. Siberian: a large cat that has medium-length hair and originated in Russia

6. NFoundation Savannah: the Savannah originated when an African Serval was bred with a domestic cat.

7. Persian: a short cat with a round head and a long coat that needs daily combing

8. Norwegian Forest: a large cat that originated in Scandinavia and has medium-length hair that does not require a lot of combing

9. British Shorthair: has a short, plush coat and is medium to large in size

10. Abyssinian: a medium-sized cat with short hair and an active, curious nature

TICA the world's largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats and recognizes more than 55 breeds of cats.

Savannah cat - We had a client come in with her New Savannah cat -
It ate her beloved Pomeranian!! true story from a vet office!
Just stick with a regular cat - they wont eat you or destroy your home - or end up being the size of a Greyhound with sharp claws!!
