Finding a Name that Works for You and Your Dog

Erin Morris
There are all kinds of pets and there are all kinds of people. If you are a pet person, finding the pet that is right for you can sometimes be easy and sometimes be difficult. Many pet people are dog people. The great thing about dogs is that they can be the perfect pet for most anyone. There are cute, cuddly dogs, scary guard dogs, farm dogs, fetching dogs, show dogs and many many more. For some however, they have dogs for hunting purposes. Here, we'll take a look at the best hunting dogs as well as some unique and interesting hunting dog names that will give your dog an identity of its own.

There are many types and kinds of dogs to choose from, some are better for hunting than others. If you are looking for a true hunter, choosing from the following list of dogs would be in your best interest. The best dogs for hunting are the Basset Hound, Weimaraner, Beagle, English Foxhound, German Hunt Terrier, Longhaired Pointer, Shorthaired Pointer, Irish Red and White Setter, Labrador Retriever, Spinone Italiano, English Cocker Spaniel, Treeing Walker, Brittany Spaniel, Coonhound, Vizsla, Welsh Corgi, Sheepdog or Terrier.

Now if you are hunting for a specific animal for example deer, raccoon, duck, etc, one of these dogs may be better suited than the others. For instance, basset hounds and coonhounds are perfect for hunting raccoons and other small animals, whereas sheepdogs and terriers are better for rounding up sheep or other livestock on a farm. Doing research will help you to determine exactly what dog will be right for you.

Once you've chosen your dog, the next thing to do is to name it. Giving any animal a unique hunting dog name will give them character and an identity of their own. Don't feel that you have to choose one name and stick with it; it's often suggested to make a list of preferred names and try each of them out. Make a list of all of the hunting dog names that you would like to give to your dog. Use each for a day or two, and see which feels the most comfortable. Sometimes the dog will even respond better to certain names than others.

If you adopt a hunting dog that already has a name, it is suggested that you keep the current name, because if you are out hunting, you need the dog to respond to your call. Also be wary of names that sound similar to commands such as sit, stay, speak, etc. Dogs can get confused if they hear similar sounds.

If you're having trouble deciding on the perfect hunting dog names, here are some suggestions. These rank among the most popular hunting dog names used by hunters today:

Artemis - goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals and fertility

Benelli - a brand of firearm

Cabela - great name for female hunting dog, named after the hunting accessory catalog

Champion - top on the list for popular hunting dog names

Cujo - from the Stephen King novel

The name choices are endless. If you are looking for a name that has significance in the hunting world, than the above suggestions just might work for you. The bottom line is finding a name that feels right for you and suits your dog at the same time. There are many many hunting dog names that work for all different types of dogs. I'm 35 years old and I got a treeing walker coonhound two years ago. He will actually be two years old in a few days. He was born in January and being a hound dog, he got the name of Elvis. We tried a few other names on him and he would not respond to anything, but Elvis.

A neighbor had a hunting dog whose name was "Git." He'd be out in the yard, calling "Here, Git." We were just kids then, and thought it was pretty funny. But I can't imagine a he-man hunter naming a dog Percy, let alone being a popular name!

I should get a hunting dog, maybe the dog would be able to find all the stuff I lose on a daily basis.
