Popular New Year Resolutions - Have You Made Yours?

Carole Anne Somerville
As another year is about to begin, people invariably consider their lifestyles and what they might do to bring improvements into the future. For the last few months of the year they may have been aware of habits they've slipped into that aren't healthy for them and perhaps they've told themselves "In the New Year I'll do something about it."

And because consistently these habits usually relate to the main areas of life and living such as health, work, finances, lifestyle and relationships, every year people tend to make the same resolutions time and time again.

So the most popular New Year resolutions tend to fall into five specific areas:

Most Popular New Year Resolutions about Health:

These include: Get in shape/Eat healthier/Quit a habit such as smoking or drinking/Start exercising ~

Resolutions about getting in shape and keeping fit might be inspired by factors such as deteriorating health or overweight problems.

People making resolutions about getting in shape should find out what might be involved, how they might go about this and what might be the consequences. The consequences, of course, will be the reward they will hold in mind as they try to keep their resolution. For instance these resolutions might spring from the necessity to meet the ordinary demands of everyday life or the desire to enjoy life more and to feel healthier and more alive.

Resolutions to eat healthier could be inspired from a desire to shed weight or to eat less convenience foods. These resolutions might include paying more attention to ingredients lists on labels, eating more fresh food as opposed to processed, to reduce snacks or to change eating habits.

Most Popular New Year Resolutions about Finance:

These include: Get out of debt/Spend less/Make more money/Save money/Start budgeting ~

Resolutions that revolve around money usually have to do with the way people handle their finances, the lack of money, the need to earn more or the desire to save up for something special.

It may be the worry about job insecurity or not being paid enough to cover everyday bills that cause people to decide that in the New Year they will make changes to their financial situation.

Most Popular New Year Resolutions about Career

These include: Get a new job/Start a training course or Go back to school

A lack of job fulfilment can cause stress, unhappiness and even depression. Stress in the workplace can be the worst stress of all and unless things are changed, it can be the hardest to beat.

Problems to do with career can include pressure from management and possibly too much responsibility, personality conflicts between workmates, poor working conditions that might affect health, too many or too few hours, too heavy a work load or a lack of future prospects.

Not being recognised for talents or appreciated for what they do are other concerns that might cause people to make New Year resolutions to change their job situation.

Most Popular New Year Resolutions about Relationships

These include: Spend more time with the family/Find a mate/Get out of a bad relationship ~

To stay mentally and emotionally healthy, harmonious family relationships, positive partnerships and good friendships can make a big difference. Points people might think about when making resolutions to do with their relationships is: what they might want out of existing partnerships, what their partner wants out of the relationship, how they might make new friends and possibly meet a new lover if they are single, what changes can be made to make romance and family life more happy, healthy and enjoyable.

Most Popular New Year Resolutions about Lifestyle

These include: Get life organised/Find a hobby/Volunteer to help more in the community/Take a trip/Move house

What About You? ~

Above has been discussed the most popular New Year resolutions and the main areas these centre on. Perhaps you need to reconsider the balance of activities in your life and as another new year approaches?
