If you are planning on growing a garden this year, you will probably want to include some tomatoes as part of your crop selection. Although you might think that all tomatoes are alike, selective breeding and hybridization has actually led to a number of prolific breeds of tomato that will provide you with numerous tomatoes throughout the growing season.

Celebrity

This award winning tomato (it won the All-America Selections in 1984) has become a very popular variety of tomato in backyard gardens. The plants remain short and bushy (so you won't have to stake them), and they produce 7 to 8 ounce red fruits. They are highly productive, and you can usually anticipate having your first harvest in around 70 days after planting. It is immune to a number of diseases including wilt, nematodes (a variety of worm), and tobacco mosaic.

Supersweet

This taller variety of plant (which may need staking) produces small, red cherry tomatoes that are well-known for their sweet flavor. You can usually expect production to be in the hundreds, and your first yield should come after about 65 days of planting, making this quite the early maturing tomato plant. It is resistant to several varieties, but may have some other health issues.

Jet Star

If you are looking for a tomato plant that is strong in both production and size (the fruit weights about 8 ounces), then the jet star is for you. In addition to low acidity, the fruits are also crack-resistant, meaty, and they possess a rich, strong flavor. They are resistant to several types of wilt.

Lemon Boy

If your tastes run more to yellow tomatoes, then you will definitely want to try this prolific tomato variety which, despite its relative newness on the tomato scene, has developed a reputation for its high productivity. The light yellow fruits are firm and typically weigh between 6 and 7 ounces. Although the plants are quite vigorous (they are resistant to both nematodes and wilt), they do take a little longer to mature than some other varieties. You can usually expect your first crop within 72 days.

Better Boy

There can be no doubt that the better boy is one of the most enduringly popular of the tomato breeds, and it is easy to see why. This tomato plant is enormously productive, and the globe-shaped fruits can often weigh as much as one pound. They resist both wilt and nematodes, and they typically mature within 75 days.
