Aeris Gainsborough is one of the main protagonists of the game, she was one of the most popular characters in the game. Her murder is sudden and shocking and utterly irrevocable. The moment signaled that video games were not just for kids anymore and left a deep impact in the world of video games. The death of Aeris was so shocking that there are still rumors and petitions to have her revived.

Mortal Kombat

Cartoonish and silly by todays standards, Mortal Kombat's graphic ultra-violence was truly shocking when the series first came out. Especially the 'fatalities' freaked out parents all over the world while their kids spent hours memorizing long button sequences that would let them rip the spine out of their foe and wave it in their face.

Knights of The Old Republic

Possibly the greatest plot twist in video game history takes place in the Star Wars game 'Knights of the Old Republic'. As the game starts you take control of a Jedi Knight with spotty memory. On your quest through the galaxy you slowly piece together the back story which revolves around the most evil Sith Lord the world has ever seen. The shock is great when it is revealed that you yourself is Revan the Sith Lord.

Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2

Modern Warfare caused one of the greatest controversies surrounding any video game. Considering the blatant shock tactics of many video games that is quite an accomplishment. The outcry over Modern Warefare 2 came as a result of one of the missions in the game; No Russian. In this mission the player takes part in a terrorist attack in a Russian airport. The player walks through at a slow pace gunning down civilians and police officers. Predictably the mission caused enormous outcry.

GTA IV: The Lost and Damned

'Grand Theft Auto' has always been a game series that thrives on pushing the envelope. Some of the enormous appeal of the series is the freedom players have to go completely nuts in the sandbox environment of the game. Blatant sex and violence can only take you so far though, and with GTA IV Rockstar needed to break new ground to achieve their shock effects. They decided to break one of the most stubborn media taboos by including a scene with full frontal male nudity. The scene is completely unexpected and is quite shocking with its convincing 3D modeling.
