Most Surprising Things About Fatherhood

Mary Lamphere
Well, I am not a father myself but that doesn't prevent me from seeing some really amazing and surprising fatherhood moments between my children and their father. All I have to do is ask him about these surprising moments and small achievements and he could just talk for hours. There are just so many surprising things about fatherhood that it's actually difficult to even break it down into a simple and quick read, but here it goes-I talked with my husband and this is his firsthand account of the most surprising moments that he's had so far as a father.

Surprising Things About Being a Dad #1: LOVE

Of all things, the most surprising thing about being a dad is how you can grow to love a child so much when technically, in the beginning, you don't really even know each other! It's truly amazing how, just because this is your child, you are just pretuned or predispositioned to love that child unconditionally! And what's even more surprising? The fact that my children love me so much!

Surprising Things About Fatherhood #2: How All Your Cares Can Just Drift Away

My husband used to be so self conscious and was always wondering what other people were thinking about him. Now, he says that he just doesn't care so much and the kids can make all his cares just drift away! He can laugh and play with them without even caring if he is making a fool out of himself and it's the funniest thing to watch a dad be extremely goofy while the kids roll in laughter!

Surprising Things About Being a Dad #3: Planning

Alright, all dad's know that when they have a child there is tons of planning involved-planning for outings, planning for nap times and dinner time and when you will have a spare second to care for yourself-but most dad's don't truly realize the extent of the need to plan until they actually have that child in their arms and in their life! My husband claims that he still just can't seem to plan enough now that there are kids involved. What used to be a quick trip to the beach is now a matter of planning three days in advance to make sure that we have all the toys packed, sunscreen, food, snacks, drinks, first aid...the list goes on and on yet my husband (the father that he is) says we still always forget to bring something! So maybe this surprising thing about fatherhood isn't all about planning but more about how forgetful you actually become once you are a dad!
