Most Unusual Sports Around the World

Pauline Abreu
There are many unusual sports, which are practiced around the world. Actually, there was probably a time when most sports would have been classed as being unusual. However, these sports take the word to extremes, and they make the list of the worlds most unusual sports.

- Wife Carrying -

This competition is held in July every year, in Finland. The sport is as it sounds, a man carries his wife while
trying to get through a course with various obstacles along the way. The race takes place on dry land as well as in water. The winner receives a cell phone and their wife's weight in beer as a prize. The "wife" doesn't have to be the persons actual wife, any woman will do. The rules are she must be over 17, there is a 15 second penalty if she is dropped, and you must have fun!

- Dunny Derby -

It is held every second year in September, in Queensland, Australia. The event involves one person sitting on a toilet, while being pulled along by another person, Dunny is the Australian name for toilet. That's all there is to it really, the toilet has wheels, which makes it easier to be pulled along. Whoever gets to the finish line first, wins the Dunny Derby.

- Bog Snorkeling -

This unusual sport has a competition which is held every year, in August. The location is Waen Rhydd Peat bog near Llanwrtyd Wells, in Powys, Wales. The object of the sport is to race along a bog trench wearing snorkels, flippers, and an optional wet suit. There are men's, women's, and junior categories.

- Lawn Mower Racing -

Racing a lawn mower does seem like an unusual sport, but people take it really seriously. It was first invented to cut the costs of any other racing sport, the fact that it was cheap to get started was one of the reasons why this sport became as popular as it did. People participate in lawn mower races all around the world, although it does seem to be more popular in the US, than any other country.

- Mud Olympics -

This isn't just one unusual sport, but a whole host of them, mud soccer, mud handball, and boot throwing are to name but a few of the events played in this unusual sporting event. Mud Olympics are held once a year, in mud flats along the banks of the Elbe River in Brunsbüttel near Hamburg, Germany.

- Underwater Hockey -

As the name suggests, it's hockey, but played under water, with the puck being at the bottom of a pool. Another name for the sport is Ocotopush, two teams of six push the puck while wearing snorkels, they have to come up for air now and again while playing.

These are just a few of the unusual sports being played around the world today. They seem like they would be a lot of fun to try out, and some of them even have their own charity events, relating to the sport.

Great list, love the "wife carry." But for my money, curling is definitely the weirdest sport. LOL!!!
