Motel 6 Review: A One Night Stay in Hagerstown, Maryland

Beth Benson
On an eight hour drive from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Ocean City, Maryland, my boyfriend and I decided to stop at a hotel at our halfway point which was in Hagerstown, Maryland. The first exit we took led us straight to a Motel 6 on Massey Blvd. Being as tired as we were; we had no choice but to stop for the night.

When walking into the lobby, we were greeted by a not so friendly front desk clerk, and the registration area was a tight squeeze due to a vending machine, ice machine, and a washer and a dryer crowded into the corner.

For one night it was $60 for two adults with two double beds in the room. Even though there were two of us checking in, we only received one key. The front desk clerk did not ask if we had any type of discount card such as AAA or advise us of any hotel accommodations. There was a gentleman in front of us registering for a room and the front desk clerk asked for his license plate number, however when we registered, that question was not asked. When parking in the lot in front of our room, there was a visible sign stating that unauthorized or registered vehicles would be towed. So we had to go back to the front desk and alert the clerk of our vehicle information.

Upon entering the room, we found a large, dead mosquito laying on the air conditioner. Luckily the beds were cleanly made and the room was equip with a white pages, yellow pages, Bible, and cable television. The beds did have clean sheets and comforter, but the mattress wasn't very comfortable and the pillows were very flat. We did get a chance to look up the nearest Wal-Mart in the yellow pages, and found that the information of the location of that Wal-Mart was out of date.

The bathroom was fairly clean, although we did run into an ant or two running around. There was no complimentary shampoo or conditioner, which could be purchased in the lobby vending machine for two dollars each. There were clean towels and wash rags available. At one point there was an issue with the toilet becoming clogged and there was no plunger available, so unclogging it had to be done using a wire coat hanger. That of course was extremely unpleasant. The shower hardly had any water pressure and even with the shower curtain tightly closed, the tub seemed to leak and flood a portion of the floor.

There was an outdoor pool that was gated in, however it looked like it was only big enough for about five people, we didn't get a chance to investigate and try the pool.

The Motel 6 was right across the street from a mall, as well as about five minutes away from an IHOP, Taco Bell, and McDonald's.

Overall, this is not an extremely recommended hotel, and should only be considered for extreme necessity. We had no plans on stopping in Hagerstown, Maryland on the way back from our vacation to stay at this hotel another night.
