Motel Hell: Cult Classic from the '80s

Eliza Wynn
Motel Hell is a hilarious classic horror movie from 1980. The title is something of a play on words, depicting both the name of the motel and the general state of affairs for the unfortunate soul who wanders anywhere near the motel and its proprietors. The story takes place at the very rural Motel Hello. However, the letter "O" on the sign has a bit of trouble, its light flickering on and off. The lights on the other letters are fine, so that when the "O" is out, only the first four letters of the word remain. "Hell" is a good description of the motel, as you're about to learn.

This motel is run by a farmer named Vincent Smith and his sister, Ida. It is actually located on their farm, where Vincent produces smoked meats that are renowned as being the best around. What kinds of meat? Well, that's the thing. According to Vincent's business slogan, "It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent Fritters." When Farmer Vincent needs more livestock, he goes out and catches some. He does this by using booby traps on unsuspecting victims just trying to travel down the road or find a place to rest for the night.

Motel Hell is quite disturbing, so if you tend to be squeamish about cannibalism-themed movies, this film may not be for you. On the other hand, if you'd really like to see a cult horror classic that's great campy fun, check out Motel Hell.
